What will you do with moving fortress parts?
« on: November 05, 2010, 11:42:09 am »

Quote from: Development Page
Improved Mechanics

    * Better traps
o Stone traps should require the stone be placed above the tile that is targeted
o Stones should be able to roll (perhaps if they are started from or land on a ramp tile)
o Weapon traps should be multi-tile and require a spring or other potential energy source -- automatic resetting should require some explicit establishment of a feasible mechanism
    * Large pipe sections -- walk on them or crawl inside them, allow passage for fluids
    * Moving fortress sections (lifts, crushing traps, etc.)
    * Waterproof axles through some mechanism
    * Rock grinders? Fans? We'll do some other machines around this time -- whichever feasible ones are the most entertaining for dwarves and treasure hunters

According to Toady, after the army arc, site resources, caravan arc, and other adventurer mode improvements are done, he will begin work on fortress mode improvements. None of the fort mode improvements I've seen so far excite me quite as much as the bolded item above, though.

Moving fortress parts. Doesn't the very idea of it excite your inner-dwarf?

Anyway, I want to know: what do you plan on doing when this is finally implemented? Elevators? Rooms with lowering spiked ceilings? Dwarven MECHA?! No one has any idea how it will work when it's finally released, but feel free to speculate and post your devious plans here.

A dwarven mecha?
Sounds nice.

Moving fortress parts will be so goddamn awesome, I will make a fortress that will only exist out of moving fortress parts, and if some enemes attack, I just make my fortress stand up and release the magma.

It makes my inner engineer excited.  My outer engineer as well.

Although all the mechanics planned are going to be used to make water more dangerous in my hands.  Even the rocks.

A magma-spewing giant chalk fortress mecha. I shall destroy the elves with my fortress.

Practically speaking I think entire walking fortresses would be an FPS nightmare...

Gobbo-launcher, Wile. E. Coyote style.
Giant, walking, firebreathing dwarf statue... and a bunch of smaller wooden ones of elves.
Stuff from Indiana Jones.

In that order.

Wow, after reading this thread I've got an impression that 90% of DF players have mainstream computers for their home PCs... I will probably use moving parts for easier magma use to dispose of enemies and nobles or for perpetually changing mazes for entrance to the fortress.

Huge systems to bring water and magma up from the depths of the world.
Conveyor systems to move stuff to automatic dumps.
Huge crush traps for invaders.
Trade depots that grind elves into paste.
Magma incinerators.
Massive drawbridges crossing deep moats.
Wildlife harvesters.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I shall make many things... dwarven MechWarrior-like things, a boat fortress, numerous ingenious methods of goblin confusion and extermination. and automatic watering systems... I kinda wish that farms would require water every year when that comes...

beforeedit: and the stuff right above.

Assuming that moving fortress parts can move freely and are not bound to rails or something like that, dwarven battletanks with magma tank on top for rapid area denial. If they are, rail-mounted battle trains with magma tanks for rapid area denial. They'll be armed with ballista and catapults which are then mounted on ANOTHER rotateable platform.

Other than that, a rapid transport vehicle that grinds gobbos into a fine paste when it moves to the exit, transporting my legendaries. Also, I will most likely make a giant bucket I can lower into the magma sea to scoop up magma, saving me from using pump stacks.

I got a feeling that a lot of this will not be possible, but I like to dream.

Let's be clear here; moving parts does not mean dwarven mecha. It means you might build a platform similar to a bridge that works like an elevator or, perhaps, a minecart.

Where are people getting the idea that they could build a whole dwarf-shaped 40-level-tall animated statue?

Because we don't even have moving parts, and we build computers. Do not underestimate the engineering capability of the Bay12 hivemind.
