I've tried to embark on several different points on the same region, but the game hanged up. After the fourth time, I left it in the background till it loaded. When it finally did, I was shown a vision of a world mostly covered in lava, with a giant slade spike going more than 100 levels up into the sky. Also, somehow hell is visible.

I think you're mixing up the game and real life.

This is extremely ballin' and you should feel ballin'. I've never even heard of that before. Forget the adamantine space elevators, forget the volcano without the rock, I'd actually download this map and try something with this.

You should worship the space spike. WORSHIP THE DEVILS. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD.

I downloaded the save and managed to embark after a few tries.

Something is definitly wrong with this world. This is how it looks like on embark:

It crashes shortly after unpausing. The world map looks normal, but there seems to be an aquifer everywhere.

This sort of thing has been happening a lot lately. We've had like four or five adamantine spires (one of which was over 2000 z-levels) and at least one thing like this thing (the "Magma Mountains" thread, I think it's in Dwarf Mode discussion).

In looking at the legends mode I found something else that's odd. It seems that all, or at least most, wars centered around a town called "cloudyblossom" which, by the time world gen ended in 349, had been destroyed 55 times.

I'm wandering around there a bit. Very very laggy. Every river I've found has been flooding its banks but no spires of slade yet. Game doesn't seem to like towns, Freezes on entry.

Ahem. I find it unlikely Toady will ever even see this, let alone comment, but the more I see this thread (and the Lava Mountains thread) the more this keeps running through my head.

Holy shit.
Someone crank out the legends mode. This would make an awesome story for someone to write. A great mountain of black rock shooting from the (realm name here)'s surface, clowns crawling through the many interweaving pits and caverns over the destruction and revival of a sacred city.
