Atom Smashing in .16 ?

I recently decided to try out .16, and just set up an atom smasher. One tile, blocked by a lock door.

I'm unsure why this isn't working, did atom smashing get fixed in this new build ?

Need more info on your set-up. There are too many things you might be doing wrong; they should work.

Okay, the 'should work' is what I needed to know.

Right now, I have a 1 tile long hallway leading to a drawbride like so:  WWWW
                                                                                             WOD__
                                                                                              WWWW
W = Wall
O = Drawbridge
D = Door (Locked)

I have a lever hooked up to the bridge, and have it set to pull on repeat.

Items were placed on a dump zone while the bridge was in the up position, then the door was locked.

Are you sure you made a raising bridge and not a retracting bridge?  Only raising bridges atomsmash things.  Also, with a single-tile bridge, you want to dump items on it when the bridge is in the lowered position.

I thought that bridges needed to be 2x1 to work as atom smashers.

I've never made a 1x1 bridge at all.  I can't see how that should work.  Where would you put the stuff when it's in the raised-and-acting-like-a-wall position?  How would the lowered bridge differ from the raise bridge -- would it simply act as a road instead of a wall?  Where would the smashing part take place?

I've successfully used 2x1 bridges for atom-smashing.  It works fine.

A 1X1 raising bridge basically acts like a floor when lowered, and a wall when raised.  To crush stuff you drop it on the bridge when lowered, then raise it.  Raising drawbridges smash anything on the tiles that turn into a wall when they raise.

I'm starting to wonder why I build flood gates when an atom smashing door would be so much more fun...

The problem with 1x1 raising bridges is that you can never tell if they are raised or lowered except indirectly, through interactions with items and pathfinding.

There is no purpose served by a floodgate that a drawbridge doesn't do just as well, and it's indestructible when raised.

I have used raised single-tile drawbridges to hold building destroyers at bay in many fortresses.  They seem to be safe to me.
I'm fairly certain that a raised bridge is invulnerable, but the mechanisms "inside" of it can be damaged/destroyed.

Raised drawbridges function exactly as walls do. They cannot be destroyed. I've never heard of the mechanism being damaged, even with magma I've never had a problem.

You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.
