Raised drawbridges function exactly as walls do. They cannot be destroyed. I've never heard of the mechanism being damaged, even with magma I've never had a problem.

Magma can only destroy items on the tile it's on. So you can e.g. use wooden doors to block magma as long as they stay closed.

I've seen a bridge destroyed once- a dragon breathed fire on some idiot on the wrong side of it, and some bridges melted in the blast. Fortunately, the idiot won (and thus got promoted from "doomed idiot" to "hero of the realm").

I've never seen anything else damage them.
