Determined Monster Defense
« on: November 04, 2010, 02:24:34 pm »

Cheddarrius's Monster Defense was a blast, and Wolfchild's Paranatural one had promise.  But both games are on hiatus, and have been for over a month.  I'm not sure what took me so long, but here I am, launching a new version.

Originally I was going to use Cheddarrius's clearly effective system which we all loved.  Then I decided not too, because I guess I'm crazy.  The main differences are:

No money, no experience system  The players are a professional squad with the full support of the remnants of civilization.  Just don't fail.

Almost No random chance  Didn't seem necessary really, and makes teamwork complicated.  Your emergency sidearms have a chance to miss.  Changed my mind, but the AP cost is up to indicate you shoot several times.

Incomplete intelligence You can only identify targets in LOS.  Hidden targets do show up due to "thermal imaging" (a bit of a handwave, but you would have some clue about the shape of the horde even if you couldn't see it clearly).  One or more special types will be cold-blooded.

No HP Well, maybe certain specials.  Commons are meant to fall in droves, and it feels off when a zombie nibbles your feet while you mow down his buddies.  Don't get bit, period.  What exactly happens when a player goes down will be determined case-by-case.

So, pretty different huh?  But it's still a squad of PCs on a tile grid mowing down swarms of nasty monsters.  I thought about simultaneous turns, but... eh.  Doesn't seem like it would work well.

As with any new game, the first round will be horribly broken while the kinks are worked out.  Please don't hold back with ideas or criticism.

Wow, fast responses.  I'll post a map tonight so people can choose starting locations.
It'll start with enemies coming from just one direction, but I'll be ramping up the difficulty as you survive.  Like I said, it's a shakedown of the rules.  Retreat will be an option, but you're guarding off-map evacuees so... try to avoid it.

Down the road there will be civilians on-map.  That will be fun, as will the new special types.

Update on the chaingun: The 8AP are spent on turns it fires, even though you choose to fire the previous turn.  So you can't run 10 tiles on the turn the bullets come out.  For now I'll let the player use those 2AP to move before the gun fires, as a form of last-second aiming.

Also, I'm wondering whether all actions should take place at once.  In other words, do I allow the sniper to hit a special that's only exposed because the chaingunner cleared a path in the same turn.  I'll allow it for now, because otherwise the sniper will have a *lot* of trouble hitting specials (they'll just move to cover on their turn because they aren't stupid).

Is there only one player per item? If not, I'd like a long rifle.

Jeezum crow.  You're all accepted, and this system is going to get properly *stress* tested.  Awesome!

Is there only one player per item? If not, I'd like a long rifle.

No such limit, nope.

So that's:
Meph, flamer
Kashyyk, chaingun
Criptfiend, rifle
Burnt Pies, shotgun
Jetsquirrel, shovel
Cheezy, shovel
Sheb, chaingun
Megaman, buster cannon rifle
FuzzyZergling, flamer
RAM, shovel (oh u and melee)

10 players, very good variety in equipment.  Alright, here's the map:
Spoiler: The Map! (click to show/hide)

Zeds will start in rows 1-10.  You can start and place constructions in rows 20-29.
You'll be represented on the map by a symbol of your weapon with a background color of your choice.
So post your starting location, the color, and if you have constructions to place then give their locations.

You might want to edit the map and repost it, but that's not necessary.
Well, good luck!
