I do not actually know the difference.  This is because I am an American.  While it's sometimes hard to overcome my disability, could you enlighten me about the basic cultural differences?

Uhh, You're kinda asking for the entire history of the country.. Basically N ireland is the counties which wanted to join with the UK, the republic didn't. Cue the Troubles, and the rest is history.

Northern Ireland used to be governed by the UK parliament, then the Catholics and Protestants duked it out in the 80's for either merge with free state Ireland or continue UK rule respectively (ireland is part of the UK but they had their own government) a better way to point out some history.

It wasn't the Catholics and Protestants. It was the Unionists and the Republicans.
