Which finger is first?

Sorry for the dumb question, but is the first finger the pointer, or the thumb? Also if my dwarf IS missing his thumb, can he still hold weapons?

yes he can fingers are not used to hold stuff.

For some reason my dwarfs seem to lost the 2 finger on their right hands a lot.

I have no idea why.
