I will learn to draw!Hospital comics are the best comics.
« on: November 02, 2010, 07:25:33 pm »

Alright, let me explain what this is  about. It may come to a shock to you guys, that, I, the person who created my beautiful thief avatar, can't actually do anything artistically drawing wise. I can sort of write, but that isn't really important. I can't really draw. It escapes me. And I haven't looked for online tutorials because I feel that I need to carve my own path at this, even if I decide to dig into a uranium mine with reinforced lead walls. So, I decided, through brute force and little forethought that I will teach myself how to draw well. And I'm using this as an image dump place to catalog my drawings, and to let you guys  dash my ambition like a sheet of glass into a concrete wall because I sensitive bitchcriticize them. Tell me why it's bad, not just "that's shitty, fix it.", like if I botch perspective or something leave a post saying "the lines for the walls are little messed up, fix it the next time.". I will also take recommendations for art tools and stuff. Feel free to use this as your learn to draw thread too, that's what the together part is for. First drawing up in a bit, have to switch stuff over to my laptop to actually scan.

I'll just chime in and say -- tutorials can be useful. Especially at the start. Even if you're adamant on maintaining your own style, they can get across the basics like say standard anatomy, and save you a lot of trouble. Anyway, enough talk, post some drawerings so I can critique them to pieces.

GIMP is a pretty nice program you can use on the computer.

Yes, and that brings me to my next point. I'm getting a tablet in the near future, so expect quality to jump slightly.

This is a self portrait. I suck at recoloring, something I hope to use this to improve on. I also drew this in pencil, and then turned all the lines on the image black, so it may look a bit odd.
EDIT: I'm so smart, I forgot to post the image the first time around. Wow.

Hey! It's great that you're wanting to learn how to draw. Here's a tip: When you are learning how to draw, you should learn how to draw realistically from real life. Just take a look at your kitchen/bathroom/interesting place in your house, and draw what you see. Alternatively, you can look at yourself in a mirror and draw what you see in it.

After you can satisfyingly draw from real life, you can start to delve into other styles.

This book helped (and still helps!) me learn how to draw: http://www.amazon.com/New-Drawing-Right-Side-Brain/dp/0874774241

It's really useful, and it doesn't assume any skill level (look at the self-portrait on the back cover). You just have to stay committed, and practice diligently. Do what the book says! I can't stress that enough; even if it seems silly, (copying an upside-down drawing, for example), it really does help you. The book can be completed in a week-ish if you have the time to work on it all day. It can be found in most major bookstores, and it also requires some art supplies (4B pencil, good eraser, drawing board, drawing pad, wet-erase marker, some construction paper, a ruler, and a sheet of glass/plastic about letter or A4 size, if I remember correctly).

There are probably websites that have some tutorials and stuff, but I really can't recommend that book more.

Psssh, all art ever took was some making lots of drawings.

Though just making lots of drawings is probably a slow way to learn.

Variety is helpful.

If you want to draw humanoid characters, you might want to learn a few things about the human anatomy first.
If the anatomy of your character is correct, the picture will look good.
Learning from Real Life is also very helpful, so is making copies of pictures of really good artists. Although the latter means the style of said artist will influence your drawings as well.
Every artist started by being really crappy, remember that.

Yeah, I did think this thread was dead. I took the liberty of writing rude comments all over your handiwork. ;D
Spoiler: Critique (click to show/hide)

Anyway, tutorials can help, but what you really need is like a thousand hours of practice. No reason not to do books on the side, of course.

Also, tablets. They're all kinds of useful, but don't expect to magically gain any art powers the moment you start using one. If you can't draw something with a pencil, you won't be able to draw it digitally, either.

I know, but the scanner makes it look terrible, and if I pencil it and then ink it I have to spend an hour getting rid of the smudges in Paint.net, with a tablet it'll just be quicker. The critique was hilarious. And true, I fixed the feet a while ago, but the recolor came out bad. Let me find the image...
