Collapsing a Mountain
« on: November 02, 2010, 06:13:08 am »

As it says on the title , how does one flatten a mountain? My dwarves ineptly kept causing cave-ins whenever then start channeling. ( 6 deaths so far) . Is there any other method?

Embark on flat terrain?

But yeah channeling is generally unsafe unless you monitor things carefully, e.g. row-by-row channeling.

Start from the top and channel it out, one layer at a time.

Start from the bottom and channel it out, get it done in one hit.

It'll just drop one level and stop if you do that.

If you'll complitly remove first level of mountain, it will just crush and become 1z-level shorter.
if you want to destroy mountain, then use Support method:

1. dig out complitly every level and build an Support ( before level would be fully digged ).
2. link Support from lowest level to lever.
3. Get all your dwarfs in safe place.
4. Pull level.
5. PROFIT!!!

That still requires digging out every tile anyway doesn't it. To me the post with channeling from the top layer down would be the most efficient.

I'm sure by the time toady gets too old to program, DF will have reached a stage where as it is sentient enough to program itself.
It won't program itself, it'll be too busy taking breaks and attending parties to code.

Dig up stairs on the bottom level, then work your way up digging up/down stairs everywhere, then when you reach the top, channel down again. No deaths.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Or you could use the borring methode of ordering the first level to be channel then once finished do the next z-level. Rinse and repeat.

I prefer carving upward ramps -- they don't suffer from the grid-block mentality that channeling uses (which makes more than one miner channeling out a large area inefficient).

Just watch out for channeling out trees.

1) remove all trees
2) chop down all small peaks (except the main peak) and surrounding hills etc using ramps.  Any area that would leave a floor that's not fully connected to the main peak has to be dug out first.
3) check that your mountain now is well-connected and has only one peak...  ;)
4) designate it all for mining, and put in a column of up/down stairs starting from the peak down to the lowest layer you want to dig.
5) when it's all done, and it may take a few seasons or even years depending on the size, put in a support on the lowest layer and then remove the up stair on that level.
6) when you're ready, remove the support with a lever..

If you're feeling lucky you can do steps 2, 3 and 4 together  8)
