Yoink's Newbie Questions.
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:05:25 am »

Hi, I thought I'd make a single thread for all my stupid questions, so I don't clutter the forums.

First up: How do I get my stupid *expletive deleted* broker to do some trading at the depot, when caravans are visiting?!?

I've tried drafting him and stationing him on it, no joy, and I managed to pause the game when he wasn't drafted but was still in the depot, but I still couldn't trade. :(

Drafting him will do no good, as he'll then be in the Military which will take priority.  When you (q) over the Depot, hit (r) - to request Trader to come (we're assuming here that he has been appointed the Trader in the (n)obles menu).  I always make sure my Trader has no other jobs enabled (other than another Noble job sometimes), that way he isn't hauling stones around a gazillion squares away when I need him.  Also, he might be taking a break/eating/drinking/sleeping - which takes priority over anything else.

When you get the Merchant has arrived message, call for your Trader at that point (and start hauling in your trade goods).  I find that by the time the Merchants get set up, everything's there and I can do my trading.

Oh thanks! I FINALLY got him to trade. He must of run out of excuses. :P

The caravan should be thankful, because last time my broker wouldn't trade, I simply slaughtered the caravan and carted off all their stuff. :S They were just elves, though. :P

Next question: What do symbols on either side of an item's name mean? e.g: '<rope reed fiber trousers>' or '*<<+pine high boot+>>*'
Does that mean they're good, bad, damaged, or what?

For trading, do the following:

The moment the caravan arrives order him to the Trade Post. Check the trade post for his current job. If it is not "Trade at Depot" do the following:
- Pause the game.
- Remove the current job the broker has (using the 'u' menu)
- Deactivate and reactivate "Trader requested" at the depot
- Unpause the game, pause and check his status.

He will either:
- Go trading
- Go eating/sleeping/drinking

But he should be able to satisfy all his needs before they leave. Repeat the procedure if somehow a new job gets into his queue.

The +'s and -'s and other funny symbols are the qualities. Better quality increases their worth. The higher a person's skill means that they'll make a higher amount of higher quality items, including 'master-work' items. As for the << >>'s, I dunno XD

Hm... Well, studying the items, I think it means this: The '*' means the item's a masterpiece, the '<<' means it's engraved with something, and there's another symbol that I'm less sure about, three horizontal lines above each other, and I -think- that means it's encircled with bands of material. I think the '+' just means it's decorated with material.
I'm not sure though, just what I'm guessing. :)

Question, yo!
Are molemarians disabled by default? It says they're "arena only", but I've got a dwarf who likes them for their freakish appearance.

Oh, and thanks for the wiki link, Candy Lord.

The wiki link above will fix you up for the quality modifiers.  as for <something>, thats your encircled with bands of awesomesauce or whatever.

Also not listed on the quality modifier page (though you can find it by searching wiki for 'Wear') are the x or X tags, these indicate how far towards rotting away clothing has become

Thanks.
How do I get my squad of marksdwarves to use their crossbows? I designated their squad with plenty of ammo, but whenever I tell them to kill anything, it's like freaking slapstick comedy, they all run up using their bows as clubs.
:( It's rather distressing, as I've seen how deadly they are with their bows.

Don't give kill commands. Use move commands for crossbows.

Oh right... So do I give their squad an 'alert' or something, to make them automatically shoot stuff near them, and then move them near the buzzards/groundhogs/beserk dwarf/etcetera?

Sorry for double posting, but I have another question, too: Is it possible to make crafts from dead elves? Can I somehow set them to be butchered? :D My dwarves already dump 'em in the refuse heap.

:P Should I make a new thread for every question I have...?

How do I get marksdwarves to shoot rather than bludgeon? Do I just move them near something and set them alert?

First or all, there is a "modify" button that you can use to add things to your post.

Marksdwarves and other military dwarves will arrack an enemy on sight, but marksdwarves need both bolts and a quiver.

Nothing can be made from intelligent creatures without modification.
