What after-life would you prefer?
« on: November 01, 2010, 10:53:55 pm »

I'm not asking what after-life you think is the correct one, because I honestly don't care what is correct, just what you would wish to spend eternity doing.
I wish that the Norse had it right, battling all day and feasting all night while waiting for Ragnarok.

Can it be a... well, sounds silly, but "fictional afterlife"? As in, an afterlife that isn't held as a belief by an actual real-world religion?

In that case I like the after-life of that one robin-williams movie, where the world changes to be perfect for YOU to make you eturnally happy.

I kinda like the one I came up with for my story.
When you die, there's a vast emptiness, but with the help of a psychopomp, you can make it through the emptiness into a vast desert. If you know where you're going, there's the city of the gods. Which is pretty much just a dystopian hive of gambling, sex, and alcohol. Namely because the gods are fed up with the affairs of mortals and try very hard to forget about what's happening outside of their little city. Then there's Christian God, holed up in his garden of angsty 'Nobody understands me! *sadfaec*'
tl;dr: It's kinda like Nevada.

This, basically.

I don't want some never-ending paradise.  Without any struggle the rewards don't seem nearly as good.  But it'd be nice if things were a little softer around the edges.  Not quite as harsh.  A little more forgiving.

Like Demon's Soul...
1) You can die again and again and keep coming back.  Each time losing a part of yourself.  (You souls...)
2) You collect and consume the souls of others to stay sane and continue existing.  Once you stop... you slowly deteriorate in mind... your sense of self becomes lost and you ultimately transform into a creature of the realm...
3) To get out of this 'hell', you have to make your way to a far away location, where the elusive gateway to 'heaven' stands.  You can get there by whatever means...  Or stay in this land and make a place for your self, if you like... or if you fear what is beyond the gateway...
Noone truly knows what is behind that gateway, as none who enter have ever returned.  Its glow basks you in feel-good light.

Certainly not the christain one, because I would burn for ever in hell.
I would prefer a place where you became a god and you could create whatever you wish.

What you describe is a Christian one. If you count the Mormons as Christians

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Well, eternity in non-corporial peace would get really boring, and as I think it's obvious that challenge and overcoming challenge is essential to true eudimonial happiness, it seems unsatisfying. I'd prefer one of two things:

- N/A: Because it gives value to this life and drives us to make it as good as possible, making each moment a precious one.

- Reincarnation: Since while eternal, we learn again and again until we have in some way achived complete understanding, or perhaps we just keep learning, for there are infinite things to learn. Changing what we are and how we live is important to this. Also, people that we care about may leave diseased and imprisioning bodies and find new life and grow young again. Those that have made mistakes, even malicious ones, will someday learn kindness and innocence.

Naturally, the ones that get really good at reincarnating probably end up as cats.
