He won't help in any fights. He's mostly for things like events.

The arena rounds after the first will be tough without any extra defence. You can't quit in between rounds.

Not really. The only way your base attack or defense could be raised is by certain potions.

There is a use for the shield though.
There's a room where it could really help you. If only you had a map!

You could get this done in one turn, but you'd have to jump down, and risk some damage.
