Aimed shots in the coming update?
« on: November 01, 2010, 11:31:56 am »

Toady talked about this again  in the 10th df talk, saying aimed shots had to go in sometime soon to allow for other things that would build on them. Personally, this is one of the major things I'm waiting for and I don't think I'll play DF again until it's in. Right now, with all the new tissues and armors, the standard random aim just feels unreliable. Can't tell you how many times I've died because the game decided to target a person's toe repeatedly or left me wailing impotently away on an armored foe when a single blow to his unarmored head would have sufficed. And now, with the new and more FUN night creatures, it seems even more imperative to have some sort of tactical method to combat.

So, do you think it will be in or will we have to wait for another update somewhere down the road?

I was already pretty excited about this coming release. Now I am ecstatic.

Since enemies do it too, maybe Fortress Mode people will do it too.

If so, WOOT.

Even if not, this will be a very awesome release.

The carp will aim for your soul.

On the bright side, this means we can now rip open a hole in our opponent's chests and grab their heart.  Hopefully.

Ooh, we can finally kill people in their sleep without having to chop them all up. Just their head.

I, personally, am just going to cut off all their toes and fingers.

Can a soldier grasp a weapon if he has no fingers? We must test this, for science.

I've had adventurers lose their weapon after losing a finger and have had dwarves still using a weapon after losing two arms.

Edit: spelling...

2nd Edit: more spelling

Exerpt from townbrush.txt by Internet Kraken:

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

Now we just need the return of gore attacks so we can cause horrific pain to enemies of the fortress! (And have like three dwarves with battle axes on head-duty)

Edit: spelling...

I rarely do this, but if you're going to be vigilant about spelling mistakes, I might as well point out that it's spelled "lose."

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Luckily, he's also implemented (the need for) reach in the same update, meaning as long as you're upright the little stuff won't be able to go for your head.

On the other hand, height will now give a much greater defensive advantage to big creatures, as their necks and heads will be unreachable unless they're unconscious or bowing down to attack.

I just hope he puts in aimed defense (like he said he would in the 9th talk) soon, or armor will be nigh-useless.
