I designated a nice fishing zone on the edge of my cavern's lake today.  Its connected to a map edge and my fisherdwarves do actually head to the spot and gain the 'Fish' activity when i inspect them with (v).  They did this for a few months though i never seemed to have anything passing through my fishery workshop...could be there was othing processable.

Since then though i have noticed the 'Theres nothing to hunt in the western caverns' message which i assume is a fished out indicator (i have 0 hunters...and why would they hunt in a cavern anyway)

The only place I've found where fishing is fully stable is where there's a river (actual river, not a brook) that freezes over for a good portion of the year.  It may be that just being inaccessible some of the time keeps it from being fully exhausted of fish.

No, but even if I had, how do you explain the 'caged and tamed' part?

Cages which you buy, steal, salvage, or otherwise acquire from trade caravans sometimes have tame vermin in them, which you don't see on the trading screen unless you specifically look inside the cage.

Just so you know it is entirely possible to create an indoor fishing spot by draining water into a cistern.
This leads me to believe that fish numbers are drawn from an invisible "total", rather than from individual bodies of water.

Now that, my friend, is an answer.

Should work just fine.

It was just a 2 minute quick job though, (the most time consuming part was finding alt code for the fish icon)  all that is is basically just a stone called fish that looks like a fish and shows up in the same places as hematite.  It isn't actually functional for anything more than the average chunk of microcline.

If you make a reaction that takes that stone as input and outputs a fish object however...  Possibly like this...

[REACTION:MAKE_FISH]
[NAME:make fish from fish ore]
[BUILDING:SMELTER:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:1:BOULDER:NO_SUBTYPE:INORGANIC:FISH]
[PRODUCT:100:1:FISH:NONE:FISH_CAVE:MALE]
[SKILL:SMELT]

(note that this is completely untested.  Be sure to add the proper permitted reaction tag to your fortress mode entity to make sure you have access to it as well)

I still haven't got the hang of it. My fisherdwarves never caught anything in these vast and unlimited cavern waters (possibly because they all congregate on one tile, chatting away and scaring the fish,) so I shut down the fishery and turned them into haulers long ago. But if I were to do this successfully (and usefully,) how would I go about it? I'm totally lost on this, and The Wiki doesn't have any helpful answers.

EDIT: doh, editted wrong post

I keep hearing this but it has not been my experience. I find my refuse stockpile and fisher tend to overflow with turtle or muscle shells on almost every map. On many occasions I seem to end up with double digit queues of raw fish waiting to be cleaned.

You can mine for fish either by obsidan-casting a water source with non-vermin fish, or by exposing such a water source to the outside and letting it freeze.

Running Rivers appear to spawn infinite turtles and salmon... my fishers never run out of them.

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."
