Urist McMoodyGlassmaker wats non-magma furnace
« on: November 01, 2010, 09:06:24 am »

So I've got a fortress with both magma and sand and, as you may guess, I'm crazy churning out green glass items out of nothing.

My problem is that Urist McGlassmaker enters a mood, and just sits besides my array of magma glass furnaces, wondering where the nearest glass furnace is. Then, if I build a non-magma furnace, he'll go claim it.

Can anyone confirm/deny this behaviour?

Yes seems some moods need the non magma to work.

the wiki page about strange moods of version 40d gives some interesting information, perhaps not exact now but can help.

Yup, gotta make one of everything that can be claimed for moods. Not a big deal really. I have a few non-magma glass forges that I just make people collect sand off of. If you want to use the manager for glass items it will try to queue them on the crappy forge but you can just fill it with suspended orders to prevent that.

Best part about moods: they take no fuel, so it doesn't matter if he needs a regular glass furnace. After he's done, just use that furnace for sand gathering.

It's something of an odd bug - metalworking moods have no problem using a magma forge, but glassmakers insist on a non-magma version. For me it's a bit annoying, since I like to use work orders for glassmaking and would rather not have the non-magma version take the tasks and use up my coke/charcoal (which I'd rather use for steelmaking).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Put in a full page order for collect sand, then suspend them all. That way it sits around waiting for use.

Though, moods don't require fuel, IIRC.

Actually, I just leave them with unsuspended collect sand on repeat and let them gather sand for the magma glass furnaces.  But yeah, fill it up your non-magma forge with suspended tasks if you want to use the manager.

And I wouldn't call it a bug:  dwarves go insane if their magma forges lose power, even for a second.  So choosing non-magma forges (and powering them magically) is probably for the best.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

On a (somewhat) related note, when I try and get my glass industry started it always tells me that I don't have a container for sand.  I bring bags, I make bags, and yet I still get cancellation messages about not having containers.  Do I actually have to set the bags up somewhere to use them or what?

Actually, it's still a bug because it's inconsistent - if moody glassmakers are going to refuse a magma glass furnace, then moody metalworkers should also refuse a magma forge.
