a volcano in the cavern layer
« on: October 31, 2010, 06:58:57 pm »

My latest embark has been interesting.  Firstly its based on a custom set of world parameters with only 1 cavern layer. When I dug down I found a volcano like structure, complete with magma, in the cavern layer.  End result is I have a river, plenty of iron ore and magma all within 20 z levels of each other.

So far the only down side so fare is that I have not found any flux stone.

It's probably a high-reach magma pipe. Those are essentially volcanoes not reaching the surface. Or volcanoes are magma pipes that reach the surface.

Embarked on a haunted volcano. I am currently terrorized by skeletal alligators.

You get more of those with higher volcanism. At 100 volcanism I think a region tile has like 20 or so scattered about. I only do 3x3 embarks but I've ran into a fort that had 3 of them once or twice.

import+melt, also still a chance for marble down deeper.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

On a map with only one cavern layer it is going to be a bit less of a chance of getting marble, as the limited cavern layers really cuts down on the available layers.  Chances are, with a single cavern embark, if flux stone was not shown on the embark screen, you aren't going to find it.
