Water wheels generating power from water without flow
« on: June 01, 2008, 04:44:00 am »

I channeled a pond in an aquifer to soak up the water I was pumping out of a separate room (since aquifers are infinite cisterns). I built a waterwheel on the pond where the pump was dumping the water and had a dwarf operate the pump. The waterwheel started to spin - fine.

Then I removed the pump, thereby stopping the arrival of water on the waterwheel.

The bug is that the wheel just keeps spinning, even though the pond is filled to 7/7 everywhere with no water coming in. The pond, filled with immobile water, is considered to have a flow.

I reported something similar once, where I had a channel made above ground (aquaduct) and set the waterwheels in each section (there were 3 z levels to span) such that they'd power the waterwheel pumping water into the channel that the waterwheel was in (that infinite loop thing) but with the intention that it wouldn't "spin/pump" when it was full, only when the water level changed (creating moving water and flow).

Odd thing was, the waterwheels never stopped spinning, even after the final outlet of water (into my giant fountain) stopped.  That one was a pump controled by dwarf power.

In your case it may be an artifact of the game thinking that aquifer-pond water is always moving for one reason or another.

i can confirm this as well.

i have a brook, which acts as an aquifer in practice. naturaly, i ran a tunnel from it to my fortress, and put in a well. a water-wheel placed inside my well room, a good distance from the brook, is at full power. (which is nice, because the map has no wind).

nothing fancy, just a simple setup with rough stone road to prevent tower-caps once i dig up the cave river i know i have.

If somebody's got a save with this, I'll have a much easier time fixing it up.  I'll need the region folder in some kind of zip/rar/7z, and any new objects that were added to the raw folder.  If it's less than 20 megs, you can send it to toadyone@bay12games.com.  You can also try The Dwarf Fortress File Depot which has a special section for bugged saves.

I'll see if I still have my fountain around somewhere.  If not I can attempt to re-create.

Also: as a side effect, the water I was pumping came from the salt water ocean, but the water in my aquaduct was drinkable.
