D&D Fan Requesting Kobolds
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:15:40 am »

In Dwarf Fortress, kobolds are mute mammals with kleptomania.
In Dungeons and Dragons, kobolds are magical reptiles with dragonblood.
(More specificly on the magic: Kobolds are good at being sorcerors, at least in the fluff.)

This fan of both games would appreciate if a modder made a version of kobolds more like D&D ones.
SRD for kobolds; click on the eye thing for a pictue.

Various things:
1.) Kobolds like mining, trapmaking, and dragons.
2.) They have a tendancy towards sorcery-innate magic; I am not aware of any way to represent this.
3.) Some have wings, some have magic stuff, ,some have claws or fangs, and some have stronger dragon blood. I think that it would be great if you could add some kobolds who could be like these; extra bonus points for some being winged, some having breath weapons, some being dragonwrought; but I would be fine if you just made one caste with all of these. (Picture of a wiged dragonwrought here.
4.) Kobolds hate gnomes. (It's because the gnome god destroyed a big, awesome kobold mine. It makes more sense in context.) If you could find some way to represent that, it would be awesome.
5.) Kobolds speak. (Their normal language is draconic, which might not exist in a world with two or three dragons, tops.)
There's probably some stuff I'm forgetting, but I forgot it.

I'd really appreciate this; I'd do it, but I'm afraid about crazy stuff happening. I'm not much of a modder.

This shouldn't be very hard, but I don't have the spare time right now to do it myself. Hopefully someone will.
I'm pretty sure someone already made a pseudo-draconic language, so that shouldn't be too hard to implement.

I thought about adding another skulking race type into genesis, and one of possible designs is "drakeling" which is quite close. If I wrap my head around it soon (in fact I mean if I stop doing home stuff and watching movies instead of modding) then it should be done quickly :).

In D&D before 3rd edition, Kobolds were skulking mammals with kleptomania... just saying.
(no, not trying to discourage people adding a new race, just my D&D geek in me flaring up.)

I'll probably be trying this myself, but it wouldn't really help you since I don't want any weird offshoot kobolds with dragon abilities.

I tried to change them in an earlier version and they ended up warring everyone and destroying them. Even though I wanted them to be the weakest civ, and keep to themselves.

I don't really get what's wrong with crazy stuff happening, that's basically how everyone plays the game itself too. It's a learning process...

You know, it would be great translating Races of the Dragon into DF terms.  I suggest:

1-More dragons.
2-Add Dragonkin (Kobolds, Dragonborn ect.)
3-More Dragon themed stuff (items and weapons)

As for the kobolds, what kind of variations would we be looking at?
Winged
Clawed
Fangs
Resistances to elements (based on heretige)
Breath Weapons

Being able to do something more with traps would be nice too.

It seems you've read Races of the Dragon. I was thinking of things based off of feats in that book-Dragon Breath, Dragon Tail, Dragon Wings, Dragonwrought, etc.

Personally, I like the rat kobolds.  Why not keep the current kobolds as is, then add a small drakeling kinda race, and have BOTH to harass your fortress?

If you can find a way to do it, make the drakelings extremely good/fast master thieves who only steal artifacts of things of steel + cotton candy while kobolds will still get whatever they can get their hands on.

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

I would just change the name of the current kobolds to something else.

Cutebolds are lame/.

I'm enclined to agree, but I'm not saying that the OP doesn't have a nice point.

But.. I think being looted by a Cutebold is better. Said theif is so damned cute you just wanna drop the drawbridge and pet him! But.. If you did, he'd cut you up with his Large Copper Dagger!
Tee hee!
(And, just before I move on, Warcraft Kobolds.. Looking back at them... I don't see what anyone sees in them! They're absolutely the worst of both! Ugly /AND/ weak!)

Though, to me, this D&D stuff seems a bit too magic-y for Dwarf Fortress...But I think a scaled Kobold dragon thing would be like having baby dragons trying to loot your fortress.

Are you kidding!!!??  In a game with Dragons, dragonlike creatures are too much?

Actually he said magic-y   currently in DF the worlds are very much a Low-magic setting (with the exception of mods like Spellcraft for dwarves, and Wizard's Tower)

Anyways I saw someone say kobold language

I used a generator to make one out of Goblin, Human, and I think one other languauge for the way I played Kobold Camp

anyways time for the shameless plug...
