Divide up the 'units' screen
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:05:49 pm »

It would be nice if the units screen let us show/hide each class of unit.  That way I wouldn't have to scroll through X zillion dead dwarves, pets and monsters to find out how many invaders are still on the map.

I would separate the list of units into these categories:

* Dwarves
* Animals
* Merchants
* Invaders
* Alive
* Dead
* Tame
* Pet
* Caged
* Chained
* Male/Female
* Nicknamed

Then you could turn off everything except 'alive' and 'invader' to look at the how many invaders are still on the map.  Or you could look at just the dead dwarves.  Or maybe you'd look at just the non-tame animals.

(EDIT:  Added 'caged' and 'chained' to the list of filters.  Let me know if I missed anything else.)
(EDIT #2:  Added sexes & pet status to the list, which would be useful for sorting out animals.  It might be nice to filter by species [Goblin/Dwarf/Cat/etc.] but too many toggles would not simplify things.  I don't want to search through 800 toggles for extinct megabeasts to find 'cat' and 'dog'.)
(EDIT #3:  Added 'nicknamed' to the list.  While I don't use that method of organization, others do and it's a pretty reasonable toggle.)

If you like this, vote for "Units Screen Filters" on ESV.

You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Yeah.  I just don't want to scroll through all 8,000 butchered / incinerated kittens when I'm trying to find out how many invaders are on the map, but there are enough uses for this that something like the skill filters where we can "turn off" unit types we don't care about would be very useful.

Also, it doesn't help that the units screen can be almost seizure-inducing once you've tossed a non-trivial number of kittens into the magma sea so that you can more fully explore it.

In terms of driving a person insane, that's sort of like the tell-tale heart but with with flaming kittens blinking at you for all eternity.

I see that there's already a suggestion for 'Better handling of deceased units in the unit list.' on Eternal Suggestion Voting, but it's not very specific and it doesn't have a link to a forum thread or anything except mentioning that it's a problem for old fortresses (which is very true).

I was going to add this idea to ESV, but I don't want to create a duplicate idea.

I would really like to see some sort of filtering like this in legends mode as well. It would have to be quite different like filtering by number of kills, tamed wilds, race, civ, etc. Color coding like in the units screen would help at least.

I don't know if this warrants a new topic on ESV because our ideas seem similar.

This would be very usefull.

There could also be an option under stocks->animals to filter by: species, sex, caged/restrained or free (or all), trained or not (or all), pet or not (or all). It would be so much easier to say cage all female cats without scrolling through all these dogs, mules, and whatever else.

That sounds like a separate idea to me, but I think it's a very reasonable suggestion.

I'd add "Nicknamed or not" to filterable items.
