Super fast game
« on: May 30, 2008, 05:52:00 pm »

I played the game long enough on my laptop to more or less memorize the key commands. So now I have moved over to my computer with the off center game only to have something else go wrong.

The game seems to be in a hyper mode or something. My dwarve mined out a room in a few seconds. This took my about a minute or two on my laptop. Even the brook on the map looks like some kind of white water death river. Everything is moving SO fast its hard to explain. Is there anyway I can slow the game down?

Wait, why is this in bug reports?

Well, two things that might help Toady One answer this is: your frame rate (turn on the display in the init.txt file in data/init.) The other is your computer's resources- how much memories it has.
My computer with 2 Gb ram runs a moderate fortress at around 30 FPS. My Awesome computer runs around 80-90 FPS. My 2000- era machine gets 5 FPS.
If you really want to slow down your machine, try selecting a larger area to embark to.
Ah! Now I remember! you can set a max FPS in the init file too.

PTTG thanks a lot that saved the day. Now I can speed the game up and down at will!

The reason I want the speed slower is because I often am doing other things while my fortress eats up the ques I have set.

More processing power than ram... Its not like the graphics are actually that challenging, its just all the calculations DF does every second of every day (so to speak)

Dwarf Fortress hogs an insane amount of memory.  The CPU is busy swapping stuff back and forth from virtual memory because your "real" memory is full.  If you can manage to satiate its insane memory allocation, things'll speed up significantly.

Lies.  My laptop with 768 MB of ram can run DF at 100 FPS right not (funny thing is about 3 months ago I got 12--I honestly did nothing).

Is it at the main menu?  I notice a spike in FPS right around there.

There really needs to be a spot in the wiki about what type of computer one should get to run DF really fast. I'd really like to know before I buy my new laptop. . .

To answer why some people with faster computers run Dwarf Fortress slower then people with slower computers.

Simple: Background tasks

More so then before there are many background tasks being done while your computer is on that you do not notice. Then there are the tasks you don't generally use with less important computers such as instant messangers.

That is the only reason I can come up with... unless they are just so overly compatable.

Also if the computer is hand-made there can be some issues with different frequency on motherboard and RAM panels thus the memory allocation works slower.
Also it depends on model, different models have different weak/strong spots and not every laptop has efficient memory allocation speed even if its characteristics are high.

Just set the max fps and be glad that you don't have an opposite problem.
Or embark on huge area.

Today definitely there're a lot of displaced questions in the bug reports thread.
