Engravings. Checking out some masterful engravings of a donkey dying of dehydration is wonderfully relaxing after dealing with invasions, flooding, clowns, etc.

Near-invincible horse foals. I find it amusing to order my dwarves to chuck one of these down a 6 z-level chute over and over again until it dies of suffocation.

....Hey, at least it's not kittens.... IDEA!

Someone should make a thread about best engravings.
I was looking through my stockpile and saw some engraved piece of junk gathering dust, so I took a closer look...
It had two engravings, one of an elf being elected as ruler of the local elf civilization, and then another of said elf civilization being destroyed by humans years later. :D
It was engraved on something bizarre too, like a crutch. I'll try and find it...

EDIT: Oh, and also: My trained war dog got torn apart by a rhesus macaque, who then got the s*** beaten out of them by my guard-vulture... Who I chained up outside and forgot about ages ago when I ran out of dogs. :D I loved that.

When Urist McRandomDwarf is the first contact with a goblin ambush and manages to slaughter the first goblin he slams into. I have seen a Woodcutter and a Miner both take out the point-goblin in the first strike, and it never fails to make me smile.

I love the 'swarm of bees' effect I get when I designate a large area to be cleared out or built in, even if it plays merry hell with my FPS.

Yeah this is awesome. Happens fairly often, too. Gathering goods for trade, dumping the contends of the refuse pile in magma, claiming goblin presents. And the beauty of it is that it stays awesome each time you see it.

This might sound mildly psychotic, but I like having several dozen little doods to obey my orders, build me things and amuse me when I'm low. DF is like an ant farm with self-awareness. This is what God feels like.

Right now I have a wounded milita member with a torn-up arm. Every time the surgeon goes to fix it in the hospital, the militia guy gets out of bed to go have a beer. I laugh every time I see the message.

*Urist McDoctor cancels surgery: Patient not resting."

Where is patient?

At a party, of course. :)

Seeing "An ambush!  Curse them!"  when my wood hauler finds the badly maimed remnant of an ambush my traps butchered before anyone even noticed.

Seeing 'Dwarven Kneevil' in the hospital.  He had twelve, count it, TWELVE broken bones.

Those times when EVERYTHING conspire against you. I'm talking human seige at the same time some forgotten beast decides to wreck your lower levels, and then a tantruming dwarf (upset over all his dead friends) wanders into the control room and pulls EVERY LEVER. Flooding the fortress with water, magma, and cats, reandomly toggeling the draw bridges, and of course activating "emergency lockdown" which of course includes the controll room. He then smashed several levers. I probably would've been angry had it not been so damn hysterical.

When you have a war dog assigned to a soldier, the soldier dies, and the loyal dog remains at that very spot as if waiting for his master to come back  :'(

When a crippled dwarf's kids go and visit their invalid parent in the hospital  :'(

When there's an ocean of barf and pus at the bottom of your communal well  :'(  That one just breaks my heart.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.

It brings tears to my eyes when an immigrant novice clothier makes me a legendary sock that menaces with spikes of rope reed fiber.

Also reading the combat reports of my traps tearing goblins into pieces, serrated disks are wicked devices.

Edit: a single goblin swordsman falls 5 stories shattering both ankles and feet. After 5 minutes real time, manages to regain consciousness and manages to work his way through my labyrinth of traps into my magma forge room.  I send 2 troops to slay him he manages to knock a veteran out and slays a rookie (the weaver who produced the sock). Proceeds to exit through my trapped exit my heavily trapped entrance way, which ate all his companions, by blocking everything but a iron corkscrew, which hits him in the head with only a cut.  Managing an epic escape.  I enjoy reading such epic stories of survival.

All Hail Ozud Ozudspamo, Goblin Swordsman, Survivor of the day. Truly should have earned a name...

Exerpt from townbrush.txt by Internet Kraken:

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

When I catch so many of an animal I have to let it go. It seems like an oddly humane way to treat cute and furry animals. Like I'm saying "oh, how nice, another fox. Quick little Urst, set this cage outside and release the scared little creature".

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

The concept that spikes made of silk can MENACE dwarves. I'd find them cute.
