Artifact failures.
« on: January 23, 2008, 05:22:00 pm »

not exactly a bug, but.. just something defenately wrong with the random generations of artifacts.

Well.. this latest game here i got the best map ive ever been on.. magma.. adamantium, river, plenty of trees, more ore than i could shake a stick at.. alot of sedimentary rock and every other rock type.. both igneous and metamorphic..

so I carve my home out of chalk (something seems so very wrong with that, but whatever... all my chalk doors and chalk chairs chalk tables...)
then I get two strange moods.. first is a fey mood, and she runs off to the leatherworks and makes a shield.. encrusted with the lowest grade coal and agate... then with menacing spikes of muskox leather... >.> coal... and muskox leather..
i think a few more variables need to be added here :P there is just something wrong there.

the next guy is my mechanic.. runs off posessed and has me slaughter a horse real quick for some leather.. (id just gotten finished making some quivers, backpacks, and water skins)

im all excited.. oh whats he going to make?.. pity he wont be legendary... and then he makes it.. Tada! more chalk.... a chalk mechanism that is worth 10,800P... something is so very completely wrong with that.. a chalk mechanism lined with horse leather... its a gear... an artifact.. thats a gear....

-.-

You think those are worthless artifacts?  I see your crappy leather shield and raise you a granite amulet with no ornamentation at all.  Not to mention the single ingredient shale door.  Man, that was disappointing.
EDIT:  I'm not saying artifacts need to be changed; I like having the occasional worthless item.

I offer up my Lungfish Bone Mace.

That's right, a mace made of FISH BONES.

And the guy became legendary, too bad the only thing I do with bones is turn them into bolts, and we all know what happens to masterwork bone bolts.  Thank Armok he did become legendary with all the atributes so I put him to work as a macedwarf.

hahah.. but yeah.. i think the whole system needs a rather sevear makeover.. just like a list of atributes for items.. and types of items that can be made..

just a very basic rundown..
a list of atributes from each type of item requested.. for instance.. some gems might add one quality or another to an item.. (would certainly be a decent fitting addition to the magic that is planned)
then certain items can be applyed in specifc ways.. so you dont get 'spikes of leather' and a fishbone weapon :P unless its like made of shark teeth.. im not seeing much there..

if anyone ever played Diablo.. it could work in a system like that.. but instead of magical effects its definitions.. where only certain combinations work.. probably would just need another config file with something like:
[FISH_BONE]
[CLASS:BONE]
[DENSITY:10]
[SHARP:YES]
[FRAGILE:YES]
[SIZE:SMALL]
[DECORATIVE:YES]
(add whatever other atributes you can think of that would be a generalization)
then say..
[CHALK]
[CLASS:STONE]
[DENSITY:100]
[SHARP:NO]
[FRAGILE:YES]
[SIZE:ANY]
[DECORATIVE:NO]

[LEATHER]
[CLASS:CLOTH]
[DENSITY:20]
[SHARP:NO]
[FRAGILE:NO]
[SIZE:ANY]
[DECORATIVE:YES]

now it goes to randomly generate a weapon.. you got your weapon types.. bows, swords, maces, axes...
a mace wouldnt need something sharp (though it could use it) so its requirements would only be a high density non fragile.. and of Medium or Large size.. then for decorative it could add many things.. cloth classed things as such could be decoration.. or gems.. and all sorts of things.. and if magic is applied to it.. certain materials might have different effects.. making that bassalt ammulet something more than just a decorative  piece of legendary crap :P

But i think your ammulet is better than my chalk gear of uberness.. i mean.. seriously what makes a gear made of chalk (even sure if its well made) such an artifact? :P the gear of uberpwntness and godkilling? an ammulet.. is jewelry.. sure its bassalt.. but maybe tis a very amazing piece of bassalt thats so beautiful and he crafted it so well carving it in such a beautiful manor... a gear is for use.. not for decoration.. making a better gear than a gear isnt really possible.. an ammulet is art.

they only flip out if their masterwork bolts fall in the chasm on the way to the archery range, get stolen from the ammo pile by a kobold, etc.

consumable masterworks like bolts, meals, and cloth can be removed from the game via normal usage without causing tantrums.

I once had 4 artifacts, two worth 2400 each and two worth 3600 each. They were the only artifacts created in that fortress too, and their grand total was only slightly higher than the single "worthless" artifact in the OP! If only I could remember what they were or still had that fortress. That fortress was made of fail.

I have a turtle bone mace. And a kobold bone war hammer.

And a cave spider silk cap with a picture of the turtle bone mace.

I like the crazy artifacts. They're amazingly hilarious. "Spikes of cat leather" (on the cap) is hilarious.

I'm more concerned about things that don't make sense. Like my artifact mudstone barrel. W T F

I always saw it as part of the item's artifact-ness.  A fishbone mace, say, is a pretty amazing thing to have...  that's probably part of what makes it legendary.  It's like fighting off an army with the jawbone of an ox.  Or whatever.

If and when it ever happens.  I keep killing the fort because of invasions, putting it off farther and farther until I can actually take one.
But yes, it'd be pretty artifact-y.  Now if had been made of any kind of stone or metal it'd do SO much more damage.

The only buggy thing I have seen is the inverse relationship between the number of turtle shells you have and how often moods want em.  whenever I get some shells just in case, no one wants em, but if I don't have any EVERY FRIGGIN MOOD will want one and fail.
