magma exploration suit
« on: October 29, 2010, 04:59:09 pm »

Hey all, to test out how some of the physics works, I created a dwarf wearing full armour that had a low fixed temperature and chucked him into lava, fully expecting him to die immediately.
I was surprised by the results: only the fingers, toes, and lips burned, causing the dwarf to eventually bleed to death.
everywhere the armour covered was fine.

So: is there any way to mod the game such that there are no exposed body parts? or mod the armour to cover everything? Because then, dwarves could go swimming in magma.... how cool is that?

I don't think its possible to completely cover the face in DF.

You're going to need something like a diving helmet, but I have no idea if someone has managed to do something like that and completely protect the head, face, and every damagable part.

I heard dresses had literally the coverage of a blind ninja suit, so a cotton cand dress should work, right?

Just checked the bug checker and it happens with modded armor, so that could be a way to do it.

I tried making a dress out my material ("cold iron," its just iron with a fixed temp of 9900) and the toes and fingers and face still burned.

hrmmmm. Thanks for the help, though.

Shouldn't gauntlets cover the fingers?

Covering the face is problematic since there isn't really anything that covers the face. AFAIK that works anyway.

What about masks? They should work, since covering the face is, by definition, what they do.

Robes seem to provide some protection to those oddball bodyparts in the combat reports.  A robe may protect the head bits since they seem to try to provide some protection to them in combat.

After that it's just the hands and feet, which we may be able to fix by modding some kind of gloves and boots with the same kind of tags as a robe.

Since mittens are required for protection vs. frostbite, I'd assume that modded mittens could protect vs. magma - you may want to try those.

why not just remove the fingers, toes, and lips first,it not like dwarfs need them.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.
