Is this supposed to happen?
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:34:20 am »

It appears that the lowest cavern layer breached the top portion of the magma sea... (I'm running DF 0.31.16)

What the hell are all those "à"s and "ô"s in that picture?

And yes, normally shouldn't that happen, but this is DF so it does.

Yet another bug, I'd imagine. Haven't heard of that happening before... though I've begun lurking here only a few months ago.
It's probably a terrain displacement bug, like the 'cave-out' with the topmost cavern layer being in the air and the second one taking its place, or the famous space elevator.
Looks rather good though. Quite an awesome bug.

Also: awesome screen resolution, man.

Is it the magma sea? Or is it a magma pipe? I think magma pipes can breach caverns but not the magma sea...Otherwise you got a 'Special' map XD

I think it's the top of the magma sea...

What the hell are all those "à"s and "ô"s in that picture?
(muddy) Goblin-caps and (muddy) shrubs, respectively, according to DF

Magma pipe with adamantine? If such can exist, it's even more awesome than this magma sea-breaching bug.

It's probably a graphical tileset modded version of Dwarf Fortress being used without the graphics - they tend to shuffle around the tiles used by stones and plants (since you can't use unique tiles for them) to use characters not used in other places in order to get more diverse graphics.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I had a similar problem. Magma pipes leaking to hell and causing one hell of a lag in FPS from the first embark moment until I no-longer bothered to play.
Dug down to find out the problem though.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

What a pun.

If there were any GCS or flammable/melty FBs or other beasties in there... well, the magma sea spared you the trouble of rerouting itself to deal with them and took preemptive action. The more proof to the theory that magma is in fact Armok's divine piss.

If magma pipes started in 'hell', it'd be called 'dwarven heaven' instead. Or at least 'dwarven resort'.

On another note... Dwarf Fortress: where a magma flood in hell is worse than a magma flood in your own home.

My guess is wild dimple cups, sweet pods, pig tails, etc.

On the map I'm currently plugging away at, I encountered some really odd geography (a perfectly square chunk of molten rock) and decided to use the reveal function in DF Hack (which I normally use only for the incredibly useful 'mark this entire vein for digging' function) and found out that one side of the map has the magma sea set 32 (!) stories beneath the bottom of the the magma sea on the other half of the map.  This means not only that I can tunnel directly into hell without using the bottomless pit or an adamantine vein, but also that the magma sea present on this side of the map is, in fact, continually draining into Hell.  I'm getting 9-10 fps with 140 dwarves right now, which is fairly respectable.

Oh gods.

This is how the world will end.

The further DF gets, the more worldgen errors start popping up.

Eventually, a worldgen error will result in a perfect replica of our world. And everyone will download it, and embark in famous or familiar places.

And whatever happens in DF will happen in the real world.

Being the crazy bastards that we are, one of us is undoubtedly going to do something like make Mt. Rushmore have magma running out of the presidents' noses.
