Ocean Waves and fps
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:44:56 am »

Does anyone know a way to turn off ocean waves? I embarked on the most amazing beach map and right now the waves aren't much of a problem, but soon the foaming effects will probably hamstring my frame rate.

My temporary solution so far is to create a sea wall along the entire coastline, but the waves crashing on the walls still generates a misting effect.

There is no way to turn off ocean waves, last time I checked, sorry.

It will effect your FPS, but if you keep your fort smallish, it won't make that much of a difference.

The embark size was 3x3, but im not feeling optimistic about it. The map is also a Haunted and Untamed Wilds so i'm expecting lots of fun.

shouldnt a huge seawall help? Supposedly there's be no fps loss if they cant reach the shore.

Solution 1: get a better computer (not so dwarfy).
Solution 2: cast obsidian in place of the water (very dwarfy).
Solution 3: drain the ocean, then wall it off (extremely dwarfy).

Solution 3 would probably make the FPS issue worse, if anything. I like #2.

The one time I pierced the ocean in my fort, it murdered my FPS. Water constantly flowing in and subsequently draining off the map is a massive drain on FPS. It got to the point hwere I actually cheated to stop the flow of water, something I would normally never do.

So while draining the entire ocean might boost your FPS, it would take so long to do that you might as well not even bother.

On-Topic: I always play ocean forts, and I have never noticed ocean waves having a significant effect on my FPS. There's no way to stop them anyways. Waves pass right through solid walls. I don't think the waves actually "exist" until they hit the shore, since random objects and Dwarves being hit by waves in the middle of the ocean has had no effect.

I'm surprised that no-one has suggested the most obvious solution yet known to dwarven science: MAGMA. Cover the sea with magma.
End of problems.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Are we sure waves pass through walls? I've had mixed results; sometimes a wall is clearing blocking a wave (like the time when I put a magma moat next to the shore and then realized I needed to build a wall if I wasn't creating a obsidian farm - and it worked!) other times I've had incredible trouble stopping them. I've always assumed waves had some sort of "height" value that they would pass over walls below that threshhold, but maybe I'm just making stuff up.

revisiting an old thread.

Walls do stop the waves somewhat, I've constructed a seawall surrounding the entire shoreline (except for the edge of map no-build zone). The thing is when the waves hit the seawall they still make a mist-like "sea foam" animation. One other annoying thing about the waves is that the water push around objects laying on the beach.

I'm just going to learn to live with it.

Hmm... just had a thought for a megaproject (that I'll never do): Switch the places of the magma sea and the ocean!

Bridge go onto the edge and act like wall when raised.

Waves have a very, very, very minor effect on FPS. That hoary marmot skittling around outside your fortress probably drains more processing power than waves. Since waves don't involve either pathfinding or fluid dynamics, their effect is barely noticeable.
