Hm...Close vote.

My opinion: Elves are useful. If nothing else, you can get them to bring awesome critters no one else does. In addition, if you hate elves, it's more fun to drown them than to just get rid of them.

Besides, I hate stereotypes.

I like elves until I accidentally offer them wood.

Then, I go into over reaction mode.

I simply hate elves so much. Everyone likes elves and I played a lot MMOs so far facing tons of elves EVERYWHERE, while I was playing the evil part being outnumbered ALL THE TIME.

You made me elitist! haha

They still bring mostly crappy cloth and stupid wood armour.  Who needs it?  Unless you're going an elf-like build.  But then you should be thrown out of dwarven society anyways.

Elves are just annoying, can't trade bins, so it takes too long... Don't bring anything of particular use... Fun to get ambushed by (especially in 40d).

Don't bring anything of particular use...

Speak for yourself. One of my first elven caravans ever gave me a tamed giant desert scorpion.

Once they stop bringing interesting animals, into the magma they should go.

Or just, you know, don't trade with them. It's not like they force you to.

The bin problem for elves is easy to solve. Record a macro that designates a whole page of items. That is it consists of down arrow + enter over and over. Simple no? Now run that macro over all the bins. The first select will select a bin and then the second will select the first item in the bin which deselects the bin! Run this macro as much as you want over your goods until you have enough to buy whatever you want to buy and then trade. As long as you aren't making wood crafts (do I really need to say this) and didn't order any empty bins this technique is fast, easy, frustration free, and will never piss off the elves.

I hate elves because they're arrogant, pushy, tree huggers. They also happen to be in nearly every piece of fantasy media.

You've heard all that before, though. It doesn't really extend to ALL elves, honestly. Take most of the species of elves from the Elder Scrolls series. Most of them don't act very much like your standard elves at all. I don't make any special effort to kill them, either. Unless they bring me useless cloth one too many times, or try and give their old tree speech I tend to let them go about their trade.

I voted wrong. I truly loathe the elves. They come in, tell you you're doing it wrong and start telling you what you should do.

And then they start with the trees!

It depends on my current mood, ranging from:
"Cloth? Into the magma with you."
"Tame groundhogs and foxes? Have some shiny steel weapons to the face."
"A BREEDING PAIR OF GIANT EAGLES? WELCOME, FRIENDS!"
It has been said before, but my opinion is that they are to be tolerated when useful, destroyed when not.

Simply put: Anyone who doesn't have the common sense to put up some kind of shelter against god damn thunderstorms is a hobo. A large collection of hobos is not a society, it's a social problem.
