I has Malware [?/!]
« on: October 28, 2010, 10:21:39 am »

Yeah, because another tab opening after clicking a link of site, any site, any link, isn't normal.

The tab contains some stupid google-like search, what's it name, 'law hunting' or 'job hunting' and whatsoever.

The problem is, I tried four different malware removers, including my favourite Spybot S&D, alas...

It keeps happening. Any options?

If you really want to squash a virus, this is the place to do it.

They will guide you, step by step, in slaughtering the malware.  They've helped me before when I had a combination of Anti Virus 2010 and Vundo malwares, which are horrible bugs to have.

I hated Anti-Virus 2010. Or was it Windows Defender 2009. Whatever. Anyway, as I keep saying, install Malwarebytes, update it, run it in safe-mode. If it changes the program/doesn't let you update, install Malwarebytes on another computer , update it, and transfer it to your computer while your computer is running in safe-mode.

I had an issue like that for a while.  I later found out that part of the reason why I could never get rid of it is that each popup window (or tab, in this case) would initiate it's own hijack and keep the cycle going, so unless I killed them all, at once, I couldn't get rid of it.

While I searched for a solution, I went onto my router and manually blocked the half-dozen or so 'search' sites that popped up.  I had to deal with "page cannot be displayed" but didn't get more junk put on my computer to remove.

I once had a rootkit that would hijack google result links.

Last resort, try combofix.

I had something similar on IE, but I just switched to Chrome and I was dandy.

I have something just like that.
I don't want to use combofix, as it looks dangerous. What else can I use?

As a side note, make sure you back up everything important from your computer from time to time.

There are times when the only real way of fixing things is to bring your hard drive back down to zero, and that way you won't lose your tax information/report for your boss/massive fort inside a magma-flooded hell.

protips:
1. Once a computer is compromised you can not be sure it's safe unless you do a full harddrive wipe.
2. Don't use an antivirus, all they do is slow down your computer while spamming you to pay for the new versions.
3. Use Commonsense 2010. It's the most effective antivirus.
4. If you use Internet Explorer, don't.
5. Stop downloading everything or going to shady porn sites, see #3.
6. If you do manage to contract malware, Malwarebytes will catch 99.99% of them (and it's what "professionals" at Frys use and Geeksquad uses their own modified antivirus scanner that's based on it). If not, see protip #1.

7. SuperAntiSpyware is a good backup to Malwarebytes.
#2 won't work for everyone, though. unless they have #3.

If they don't have #3, #2 won't save them, no matter how good or how many antiviruses they have.

You can browse the web safely and contract nothing, if you do it with commonsense 2010. Or you can browse it like my sister, and get 300 positive hits on malwarebytes even though she has Norton antivirus running with real-time scanning enabled.
