For æ we use ä, ø is ö, we don't know þ and ð  and have difficulties to pronounce them in other languages. ß has only been replaced in most words: If the vocal before it is a short one (Fluss) we use ss, if it is a long one (Spaß) or a diphthong (Fleiß), we use ß. Historically, ß is just a typographic ligature of ſs. ſ is an old form of s that was used whenever the s was not a word's final letter.

The swiss have replaced ß completely (not sure if they had it once) with ss.

I didn't mean to say that they're part of the German alphabet, it was just for demonstration. Oh yeah, and þ does show up in Old High German :P

Awesome language.  I like the way there is a kindof logic in there, it's fun to speak and... well, Germany's a very nice place to visit.

That said, I only know enough German to be a tourist and to have some basic conversations, so...
