put the six dwarves in a tiny danger room with no armour and lock them in. That'll do it.

Or if you want to do it legitimately, build an obsidian and glass capsule suspended over the volcano, seal your explorers in, and deconstruct the floor attaching it to the edge. Jules Verne style!
I give you 30 megaproject points, with bonuses:
+2 for  each supply stockpile,
+3 for every explorer that comes from the nobility
+5n for every room you manage to have assigned to an explorer, with n being the quality level of the room
Well, except that contructions fall at infinite speed, dwarfs dont. THey would be killed by the top of the dome. See the numerous posts about boat/submarine fortresses.

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

Is it possible to tweak the settings such that ambushes and sieges occur in a 1 dwarf challenge?

Will killing elves bring elven sieges even if I have only one dwarf?
tweak settings: make the attack pop requirement in the raws/worldgen 0
kill elves, bring sieges: of goblins, last time I was doing the hermit challenge.

does this mean onbe would have to gen a new world for this, or is there a way to mod a current world to allow invasions with pop = 1?
(was also planning on doing this)

Where can I find this value? I see only the titan attack population requirement in the worldgen and nothing in the raws.

Arm all 6 dwarves with axes and breasplates, wait until a mood, disarm everyone except mooder, fail it, let him become berserk and slaughter everyone in vicinity (of course, the hermit will have to be in a burrow/squad faaaaaaar away from there). If he became not berserk, repeat from begininning.
Moods only hit with 20+ elligible dwarves. Mind you, you could aim for a Fel mood and see the moody dwarf make an artifact out of another dwarf.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

For the first few.... I think the most amusing way is to bridge-drop them into a volcano. Has the advantage of letting you know of any bluemetal as well.

This. I am really tempted to try and think of a way to make them survive it too.

Netherwood armor. It has a temperature of 0c.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Even if they were falling at the same speed, they would eventually have to stop. Unless you hope for a safe splash-landing. If you do, proceed!

Hmh.. I too felt like starting a Hermit challenge today, been a while since I tried last... but now I seem unable to generate a world where Dwarves are extinct.  :(

What I believe worked before was to change the entit_default.txt entry for Dwarves to say something like:

[MAX_STARTING_CIV_NUMBER:1]
[MAX_POP_NUMBER:1]
[MAX_SITE_POP_NUMBER:1]

... or any really low numbers, from what I understand. Now this didn't work at all though! Which is... annoying, I really can't be arsed to kill all the immigrants that come season after season after season ad infinitum. The two hardcoded waves are plenty for me.

Any ideas?...

Change the population cap in the .init.

Set it to one, and you should get two sets of migrants and then be on your own.

Dealing with 6+ whatever extra migrants you have shouldn't be too difficult (just set them to a tiny burrows in some remote corner of your map and wait for them to get eaten by something).

On the plus side, it'll give you a chance to see if any of your migrants are preferable to your pre-selected hermit. If so, toss your hermit in the burrow and recruit a new hermit.

Hm, I was unaware pop_cap changes worked with such low numbers these days, from what I recall the general consensus was that it didn't before, at least.

But thanks, I'll certainly give it a try, just didn't even consider it because it was never said to be an option before.  :)
