Underground Farms stopped working.
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:41:05 pm »

I had irrigated some underground spaces and had plump helmets and dimple cups going nicely for a few seasons and then it all stopped. I was given the message that I had no seeds available for this location. My only guess is the guys detailing that section of the fortress somehow disrupted the farm by detailing the floor under the crops. Any thoughts?

That can happen. Remove the farm and check. If it's a smoothed floor, you got to remuddy it.

Or you could just use the k key.

Also, make sure you have seeds with the stock screen.

Yeah, seeds were available and the floor was smooth. I just didn't realize that was possible.

Yeah, if the floor is smooth then dwarves will clean all the mud off of it.

That's a problem, because if you muddy it again then they'll clean it again.  Probably you ought to dig another space for your farm and don't smooth that, and use the problem space for some other purpose.

No need to dig another area, simply remove the plot, then construct some floors over the area, then de-construct the floors, and re-build your plot.  When you build and remove a construction (built from the b-C menu), it reverts the underlying floor back to the natural stone for that biome/z-level in a rough state.

Even the act of building a farm plot should be resetting the terrain underneath it to rough stone/soil (in fact, it usually happens before the farm plot even gets completed), so all you should need to do is remove the farm plot, re-irrigate, then rebuild.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
