Trap weapons
« on: October 27, 2010, 03:07:34 pm »

I need the most efficient trap weapon. I've asked a similar question but many answers were mixed. So I will ask now:

What trap weapon gets stuck the least?

Cause my serrated discs got stuck WAY too easily...

No idea, I just use lots of cage traps and a flood chamber, I haven't gotten to weapon traps yet.

Weapon traps jam when a body gets stuck in them, so using weapons that do not kill instantly (hammers, other blunt weapons) would cause the weapon trap to not jam as frequently.
Special trap weapons (Gaint axe blade, enormous corkscrew etc.) are larger than normal weapons, and should be more effective.

Would weapons such as spikes, corkscrews, and spears get stuck easy? Since they don't really cut things off, rather they just cause massive internal bleeding ^^.

Cut-off parts usually fly a ways before landing, so the only thing seriously effecting jamming frequency would be corpses.
Also, I am not sure if objects other than corpses can jam weapon traps at all.

What do you recommend mass-producing? Steel spikes, corkscrews, or silver war hammers?

Oh and

Yes they can. My trap got stuck because of an 'upper arm'.

Large, serrated discs strike three times for each disk, so I personally go with those.
Steel spikes are also good, if you put them in an upright spike trap, with a lever of repeat.

Wooden practice weapons get stuck the least, because they inflict kills very rarely.  That may not seem useful but they do bust up enemies and exhaust them, and you can use them on a catwalk to force many enemies to dodge away from the trap and into a hole.

Or you can just make 10x Large serrated disc of any metal.

They turn pretty much anything into mincemeat.

I suppose if you used adamantium, it could turn stuff into mincebronze.

That's the thing, traps [edit]CAN get stuck when they inflict a kill.  Of course you have the benefit of a dead enemy but then you have a dead trap too.

Edged weapons with a large contact area tend to jam a lot because they're often instantly lethal... and if severed limbs can also get traps stuck, they tend to to this a lot as well. So while serrated disks create a glorious mess, they probably require more maintenance than the alternatives.

Training weapons aren't very lethal and don't cut bits off and are probably the best choice in some cases - e.g. a narrow walkway above somethign nasty. They won't get stuck and still cause things to dodge into open space.

If the traps need to do the job by themselves, you want something that kills eventually but not immediately. As far as I understand it, spears and spikes work best here because deep-penetrating hits with a small contact area have a good chance to be lethal in the near future without killing outright. Axes and the like are too immediately lethal, causing them to get stuck. Blunt weapons are also less likely to provide a hit that will be lethal in the near future - they'll either squish heads (bad because the corpse may get stuck) or cripple (doesn't resolve the issue. We want things staggering past our trapped area bleeding profusely rather than piling up).

I soppose the best option may just be to have a trap area with spikes, and then an empty area where they'll stagger out bleeding.
