So, here's something that's been bothering me for... gawd, YEARS now.
Whenever I think of Worms, I harken back to the days of my youth spent playing the original game on my Windows 95 system, frequently dribbling juice down my chin in hysterical laughter as I watched the little creatures explode violently in a shower of multicoloured pixels. It felt visceral, gritty, ridiculously over-the-top and brutal, all while tickling the funny bone with their outrageously funny voices and simplistic appearance.
I loved the original Worms so much. You have no idea how much I played it. It was my favourite game for many years- still is. But I've never been able to enjoy any of the sequels quite as much. I've always hated the new graphics; it's all TOO cartoony now, know what I mean? Explosions feel and look... pathetic. It's like I'm playing a game designed for 3+ year olds. Whatever happened to those big scary Bazooka blasts? You could almost feel the impact when one of those things destroyed a massive chunk of the floor in Worms 1 and thousands of particles spread out and bounced around, but these days all you see are cute little painted grey blobs that are supposed to be dust clouds, I guess, and rather than an explosion, it's just a goofy little "POP!" that looks more like you're being smacked by a wet fish than an explosive rocket. It just looks lame.
Am I alone in this?
I really wish they hadn't taken the series down this "ultra-stylised" route. It took all the impact out of the experience. It bothers me, I guess, that it all feels too "soft" now. I've played many of the games, including World Party, Armageddon and even the first abominable 3D version... I tried so hard to find the same humour in them but I never again found that special 'something', that winning style that made the first so enjoyable to me.
Graphics don't make the game, I wholeheartedly agree. But IMO, they can easily break it if it's done wrong. Whether it's just the graphics that bother me... I honestly can't tell. I'd like to think it's not the only reason I've been turned off, but maybe I'm just that shallow? I've yet to come across anyone else who hasn't had a blast playing the more modern Worms games, and while I do still enjoy playing them, they're nowhere near as fun as Worms 1 was to me. Absolutely nowhere near as fun.
Agreements/disagreements? Am I just drawing unfair comparisons, remembering the "good ol' times" with rose-tinted glasses? Maybe my tastes just changed as I grew older?
TL:DR; Does everyone except me think the Worms sequels as fun as the original Worms 1 was?
