I wish I still loved Worms like I used to.
« on: October 27, 2010, 07:34:56 am »

So, here's something that's been bothering me for... gawd, YEARS now.

Whenever I think of Worms, I harken back to the days of my youth spent playing the original game on my Windows 95 system, frequently dribbling juice down my chin in hysterical laughter as I watched the little creatures explode violently in a shower of multicoloured pixels. It felt visceral, gritty, ridiculously over-the-top and brutal, all while tickling the funny bone with their outrageously funny voices and simplistic appearance.

I loved the original Worms so much. You have no idea how much I played it. It was my favourite game for many years- still is. But I've never been able to enjoy any of the sequels quite as much. I've always hated the new graphics; it's all TOO cartoony now, know what I mean? Explosions feel and look... pathetic. It's like I'm playing a game designed for 3+ year olds. Whatever happened to those big scary Bazooka blasts? You could almost feel the impact when one of those things destroyed a massive chunk of the floor in Worms 1 and thousands of particles spread out and bounced around, but these days all you see are cute little painted grey blobs that are supposed to be dust clouds, I guess, and rather than an explosion, it's just a goofy little "POP!" that looks more like you're being smacked by a wet fish than an explosive rocket. It just looks lame.

Am I alone in this?

I really wish they hadn't taken the series down this "ultra-stylised" route. It took all the impact out of the experience. It bothers me, I guess, that it all feels too "soft" now. I've played many of the games, including World Party, Armageddon and even the first abominable 3D version... I tried so hard to find the same humour in them but I never again found that special 'something', that winning style that made the first so enjoyable to me.

Graphics don't make the game, I wholeheartedly agree. But IMO, they can easily break it if it's done wrong. Whether it's just the graphics that bother me... I honestly can't tell. I'd like to think it's not the only reason I've been turned off, but maybe I'm just that shallow? I've yet to come across anyone else who hasn't had a blast playing the more modern Worms games, and while I do still enjoy playing them, they're nowhere near as fun as Worms 1 was to me. Absolutely nowhere near as fun.

Agreements/disagreements? Am I just drawing unfair comparisons, remembering the "good ol' times" with rose-tinted glasses? Maybe my tastes just changed as I grew older?

TL:DR; Does everyone except me think the Worms sequels as fun as the original Worms 1 was?

I don't know, I rather enjoyed worms 2 (with all those total moddability of weapons), was quite okay with Armageddon and World Party and was "meh" with 3d.

I've never played any of the Worms games, so I can't comment specifically on them.

I will say, however, that I used to absolutely love Scorched Earth.  Played it for hours upon hours.  And I thought that both the visuals and the sounds were halfway-decent at the time.  Really got into it.

Recently fired it up again and was not impressed.  And this is basically the same game.  Same codebase.  Maybe a couple revisions higher or lower...  But it isn't like a sequel where somebody came in and re-did all the visuals.

I think there's a decent amount of nostalgia coloring my memories of how awesome that game used to be.

IMO, the best was Worms World Party. The ones after that were bad, so bad that I don't even touch the previous ones.

Worms is a nice, simple game. You grapple around and shoot. The 3D made it not simple... having to calculate wind in your head in 3D, etc.

I just got sick of it after a while. You find all these weird ninja rope exploits, and people who only play crate chasing because the standard vanilla arsenal gets boring after the thousandth time. There's just nothing to do after a while, and it just gets boring.

I don't mind so much the cutesy graphics. Better than the gorefest in Liero.

I also loved the original intensely. Years later on the xbox(360?) I played one that had a single player campaign through the different worlds and I absolutely loved it. Missions were challenging and fun. The new one I don't care for much. I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't work for me. (sigh)

Don't get me wrong, I played an awful lot of Armageddon too, but it still wasn't the same. Better than the newer stuff, but still lacking what made the original so weirdly satisfying.

I never played the original, I grew up playing Multiplayer Worms 2, and I'd always wonder how the CPU players were so good with the 'zooka and wind.  I was cool with Armageddon too, then when the 3d ones came out I was like "fuck that"

I liked Worms 3d.  I played this one randomly generated map in the horror theme that was like a tree floating in the water with its roots slowly sinking under.  For some reason it really creeped me out and stuck with me.  It wasn't as good as Armageddon and World Party (I never played the originals), but I thought it was fun.

I loved the original Worms.

Never was able to like the cutesy graphics of Worms 2 and later. I'd much rather play Gunbound than Worms Armageddon/Party/Whatever. And I don't like much Gunbound.

I feel like hugging you. You're the first and only person I've heard say that outright. I'm finally not alone! :P

I think it is less "Rose Tinted Glasses" so much as it was a "Taste Forming" game for you.

In otherwords the original worms is what defined the game for you

There wasn't a whole lot of room for it to improve.

As for the 3d worms, I have to say I am disapointed with the outcome but I'd personally find it sort of awsome in some concepts. A 3d world artillery game where the environment is uttarly demolished.

I started playing with Armageddon and the uber-high-quality stylized stuff is what really sold me.  I've never played the earlier ones.  Maybe I should give 1 a try.

No. I understand you completedly. Worms 1 has a simplicity and charm that none of the sequels have been able to match, and I still play it in dosbox. Plus, they add pointless stuff to the game which only acts as a resource bloat without really improving the gaming experience.

The first worms was so awesome not because of the concept, it was not much more than "Scorched Earth", which pretty much everybody knows. Or should know.

They just had a certain style of humour, and especially if you were a bit younger, it could get you giggling with glee. Also, the animations were genious. How many pixels did a worm have? 20? And they managed to express so much with those. For me, that actually was the strongest point of the game. Putting so much in only a handful of pixels, that is pure art.

But there's only so much you can do with worms blowing each other up, and pretty much everything already was in the first game. I still got the original CD, I still play it on my old thinkpad, and thats the way it should be. Why would I touch the newer stuff, I tried, and it's only ruining the experience.
