Neverending siege?
« on: October 26, 2010, 02:34:25 pm »

So I'm under siege by one goblin...

I had been under siege by a huge number of goblins and trolls, but thanks to my cage traps, airlock/smasher bridges, and the Spiral of Death, all but one of them are gone, caged, or dead.  Unfortunately, that one is currently in the dried-out pond I used for irrigating my underground farm.  There's a fortification where the water comes in, and a tree grew in front of it (I had breached the caverns), so the goblin can't even be seen by dwarfs on that Z-level.

There is a floor over the ramp, and a bridge over the rest of the pond, so there's no way for the goblin to be seen from above.  I'm not worried about the goblin - there's no way he's going to hurt me.

However, am I still considered under siege as long as he's there?  I'm assuming I won't get any migrants or traders while under siege.  Will the siege status eventually go away as he gives up, sits in the pond, and sulks?  Will he eventually die of starvation or something?  I have no plans to go in after him if I don't have to.

Unfortunately, no. You're gunna have to do something...

However, I feel this is the perfect time to suggest a solution involving magma.

So THIS is how migrations start.

You should still receive immigrants, it'll give you the message that "Some people are going to brave the journey.. etc".

And yes, you need to kill the goblin, otherwise the siege won't end.

You've got to kill him. My last siege didn't end on time, and I had the last giant rat chased around the map by a couple of squads. Proper benny hill stuff, until it walked into a cage trap.

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I'm not too concerned about getting traders since I'm in the middle of a massive construction project and cleanup from the last two sieges.  More immigrants would be nice.. I hope some decide to brave the journey.

So I guess my followup question would be:

Will more baddies show up while the siege is in effect, or did I loophole myself some protection as long as that last goblin is alive?

I've had more baddies show up during an ongoing siege. You aren't in the clear, not by a longshot.

The sooner you end this siege, the sooner you can prepare for the next eventual one.

Yah, you can have multiple sieges at once, so the little guy hardly benefits you.

I was under the impression that a single civ could lay siege to you with only one army at a time; I've had many cases where I killed off a siege only to have a new wave immediately pour in because it was held up by the current siege.

Also, a siege can end if goblins are still on the map if the goblins decide that they've taken so many losses that they flee, even if they don't make it off the map or got stuck somewhere. However, if it doesn't, and it often does, you'll have to kill him.

if you see em cluttering towards the exit it mostly is a signal that they wanna go home .. open up and they will leave .. i've noticed that after allmost a year +- they leave just before a trader is inbound  (which may trigger other sieges) .. if you get sieged by several civs (modded or not) this period may extend .. but at one point if you pose an exit they will use it :)

just go by Sun Tzu ... never refuse the enemy some way out .. in this case but for other reasons :)

You should be able to tell whether or not your are still 'under seige' by looking for the seige tag in the top bar of the DF window.  It vanishes as mentioned when the mobs give up rather than when they actually leave

It amuses me when you kill three out of twenty goblins and they flee.

My goblins have been strangely reluctant to flee. It often ends up that only one gets away, if he was busy chasing a puppy or something.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

try the fortress defender mod to get real sieges .. those mofofs there wont just runafter a few hits ^^ even the last one is going bad ass on your folks  if given the chance to ..

but i seen that later goblin sieges tend to be more durable when theres other hidden squads on the map, they are bowmen and a champion of them is present .. esp of bowmen i had to annihilate all of em to get rid of em

I'm amazed because my fortress is six years running, has broke one mill in wealth, has 88 population and has had -one- siege.
