You should have several folders listed in here...
C:\Users\Ian\My Games\DF\LazyNewbPack[0.31.16][V5.2]\Dwarf Fortress 31.16\data\save\current\
C:\Users\Ian\My Games\DF\LazyNewbPack[0.31.16][V5.2]\Dwarf Fortress 31.16\data\save\region1\
C:\Users\Ian\My Games\DF\LazyNewbPack[0.31.16][V5.2]\Dwarf Fortress 31.16\data\save\region1-sum2010\
C:\Users\Ian\My Games\DF\LazyNewbPack[0.31.16][V5.2]\Dwarf Fortress 31.16\data\save\region1-aut2010\
C:\Users\Ian\My Games\DF\LazyNewbPack[0.31.16][V5.2]\Dwarf Fortress 31.16\data\save\region1-win2010\...etc
That
\current\ folder is useless. I'm not sure what DF uses it for, but you can't use it for anything. It's just there to take up space as far as you're concerned.
The
\region1\ folder is the current save. That's what you get when you choose "Save Game" from the menu. Your old saved game is overwritten.
The various
\region1-SEASnnnn\ folders are generated by the seasonal autosave. You get one every season. They're tagged with the SEASON and the year. They'll pile up eventually. They're fairly large. It's generally a good idea to clean some of these out after a while.
If you want to make a backup of your current game, perhaps before embarking on a crazy megaproject with great potential for disaster, you need to make a copy of the
\region1\ folder. But not while you're in a live game, because nothing is saved in there.
So, what you need to do is...
- Bring up the ESC menu and choose "Save Game". Let it save. You'll eventually be kicked out to the main menu, with an option to "Continue Playing".
- Navigate to your \data\save\ directory and make a copy of the \region1\ folder. Feel free to name it something new. DF doesn't care.
- Go back into DF and "Continue Playing". You should see your new folder in there, in addition to whatever was there before.
Now, whatever one you open becomes the new "current" game. And when you "Save Game" it will be overwritten. And you'll get seasonal saves with the season and year appended to it.
So if I make a copy of
\region1\ and call it
\test\... Then "Continue Playing" and load
\test\... Then "Save Game"... That old
\test\ gets overwritten with the current game, and
\region1\ is left alone.
If I make a copy of
\region1\ and call it
\test\... Then keep playing for long enough to get a seasonal autosave... I'll get
\test-aut2010\... And if I "Save Game" my
\test\ save is overwritten with the current game,
\region1\ is left alone, and I've still got my
\test-aut2010\ autosave.
If I load up
\test-aut2010\ and start playing in it, and then "Save Game", that
\test-aut2010\ gets overwritten with the current game.
If I load up
\test-aut2010\ and play long enough to get a seasonal autosave I'll get
\test-aut2010-win2010\... And if I "Save Game" that original
\test-aut2010\ will get overwritten with the current game.
