Misconceptions About Socialism
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:52:50 pm »

This has been bugging me for quite a while, and I need to rant. Americans in general seem to think that socialists are either a: evil b: fascists or c: being duped. Very, very few people in my experience have an accurate knowledge of what socialism is. In a true socialist state, in other words, the transition point between free markets and communism, there are no deathsquads or medical rationings. The government is not determined to seize power for themselves. These are situations which happened in the USSR, which many people automatically apply to all socialism. In fact, the USSR was neither socialist nor communist, as in both situations the society is run  by the working classes, not a small group of powermongers.
An actual socialist state is one wherein the means of production of goods are owned by the people who produce those goods, not by a small portion of the populace that manages factories and the like. Each worker works for the common benefit of society, not to line the pockets of their employer. Socialism is used as a derogatory term, despite the fact that the vast majority of people are better off in a socialist society than under capitalism.
The concept that capitalism is more fair is completely false as well. The success of your parents greatly affects your prospects for success- access to higher education is by far the biggest determining factor of income, and many individuals simply cannot afford this. Grants aren't sufficient in many cases, and these unfortunate individuals are simply left to float. It's better that some lazy individuals should receive more than they deserve, which admittedly will happen in socialism, than deserving people get less.

This is Bay 12.

We are not Americans in general.

I'm aware of that, I just had a need to express my frustrations.

Yep, most of us would be closer to your standard Europeans in our politics, with the exception of Nikov (who still has a wife by the way).

I know precisely what socialism is, and hate it like the plague.

Thank you for your concern, however.

Hell, one could argue our mindset and culture is just opposed to it, whether the fake understanding or the real understanding of it is called into question.

Did you know that all "Americans" are the vocal minority of conservative fanatics in the country that fanatically believe Fox News' slogan and that all Muslims are trying to destroy the American way of life which is exclusively whatever brand of Christianity they happen to cleave to murder us?  It's true.  I should know, because I'm an American and I'm exactly like that. ::)

Nestled in between some amazing pictures of WW2, I find this, on Communism rather than Socialism "After Communist Russia introduced the second Five-Year Plan, one with a focus on armaments production, the nation began a swift descent to complete ruin. Like in China, earlier this chapter, Communism will never spell good for a nation". The book talks about Marx in such ways that I would imagine the author was just trying for polite ways to say shithead. I don't even live in southern Tennessee or anything. Would you like a more formal citing or will this do?

And yeah, Ioric has the idea.
