End to the age of myth?
« on: October 25, 2010, 07:38:41 pm »

In all honesty, I am tried of the age of myth never ending and want some more creative ages. Perhaps the age of myth ends after some point in time? If you have your own idea of how it should be, please tell me.

It does end. In fact, pre-.31, it was pretty much guaranteed to end quickly.

When ages start and end primarily depends on megabeast population. You can read more about them here.

Ages should be less predefined, especially since "Who is naming these ages?", and more based upon what is happening.

In fact I think Ages should be named AFTER the game is generated not before. It should pick ages based upon major events and alterations to the world.

I agree that the "who is naming these ages" thing is kind of silly, but it's a great feeling when you change the age of the world by your own actions.

Right now the main thing behind ages is megabeast population. Loads of megabeasts = age of myth, slightly less = age of heroes, etc. Its also affected by other populations, but to a lesser extent so the discrepancy between populations has to be pretty big for, say, the age of dwarves to come.

There should be another parameters to define the ages. Maybe the age of myths could be the age when there's few civs and sites in the world so its mostly wilderness, changing to age of legends/heroes/stuff as more civs appear, more notable historical figures emerge, etc. Instead of having the age of heroes appear when there's less megabeasts, it could show up when there's several notable historical figures in the world at a given time, etc.

Well if something just melds all the ages into one it sort of leaves much to be desired in terms of "Everything is this age"

The exception is ages where everything is dead but that is understandable.

Not independent parameters defining ages so you get several ages at the same time, but changing the age as these conditions overlap eachother. Not only that, but ages should be more randomized aswell. Say there's a huge war between the biggest civs in the world, one represented by a lion and another by, say, a cheese.
Prepare to enter the age of the Lion and the Cheese.

My understanding was that it already did. It's just that it's based on civ populations and megabaeasts. If you only have 3 megabeasts, you'll get an age called "The Age of the Three Powers". Down to 2 and you'll end up with names like "The Age of the Dragon and the Demon". 1 megabeast, you get just it's name, like "The Age of the Demon". You can also have ages like the "Golden Age" (humans are by far the most dominant race) , the "Age of Fairy Tales" (something like 95% of world pop is mundane), The Twilight Age (even humans are fading? IDK.), etc. There's actually a whole bunch. Someone put together a list of them, but I'm not sure where it is.

But that only happens if you have very few megabeasts.

If there was "The Age of the Demon" I'd fully expect there to be a demon making strikes into taking over a large population of the world.

Nonono.  One civ is wine and the other is cheese.

I think that the age in which all civs (or at least 95% of them) are dead is called the age of death. The one where EVERTHING IS DEAD is called the age of emptiness. (A.K.A. You really did it. You killed EVERTHING in
adventure mode. Mass genocide FTW)

IIRC, it also required killing all the animal populations too, which normally, is quite an impressive feat.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
