What would you do, with a virtual you?
« on: October 25, 2010, 07:26:37 pm »

The following question is incredibly strange but contains some sense of morals. You have been warned.

What if someone were to copy your genetic makeup to precise details, then upload this information to a computer simulation, this simulation then would have you, EXACTLY you in a virtual form. What would you do with this virtual you?

After answering that, consider... This is YOU, and if you were to shut off the program, the virtual you would be lost. Effectively, your copy would die. Remember, this copy is EXACTLY you, has the same feelings as you, so on.

How far would you go to keep your virtual self alive?

Fail.

There is more to you than your genetic blueprint.

I would make another and force them to make sweet sweet love.

Turn the simulation off when it wasn't watching and wouldn't expect it.  Virtual-me would be completely and absolutely miserable, to the point where it'd probably try to self-terminate anyway.

Convince it that I am God and that it should obey my every word. Put it in WoW. Have it be a warlock. The next step, not yet determined. The last step ends in profit for both of us.

Ah suck it, I don't need to know the science of it all to present the question. 0P

I'm not sure what you're getting at; what would we do with a perfect insertion of ourself into a computer simulation, or what would we do to protect a virtual copy of ourself?

1. Wargaming and porn.

2. Depends how much fun I'm having.

Kill it. There's only one me, and it had damn well better stay that way. I know he'd feel the same way, so I better strike first and get the advantage.

He's inside a computer.

He's not even the computer. He's harmless.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Hmm... well, I've read something with a very similar arrangement, so I assume my virtual self would also know this, and try to play along.  We could probably have a lot of fun (depending on the exact nature of my virtual self - I imagine they could be pretty good at hacking and games and stuff).

Create another computer inside the computer with another me inside it, instruct the first level of me to build the second level into robots (Lots of mes being created on the second level) and then take over the world.

Once he has done this, do exactly as he did in the real world.

Society would crumble as all of humanity was replaced by robotic AI's constantly managing Dwarf Fortress simulations inside their positronic brains.
