What if....

What if everyone perceived the same colours differently? SO that what I see as blue is something else to you... but we both call it blue?

nothing would change. The important thing is that you associate the correct name to the correct wavelength, and can see differences between colors. If actual perception is different... well, there is no way to know. and it is unimportant anyway.

I think everyone thinks hard on this at one point in their life.

Then we realize it does not matter.

Fun thing is that it's probably true because there's some natural variations in what wavelengths peoples cones are most receptive to.

The only thing this would ever explain is certain people's terrible fashion sense and whether or not they like the aesthetics of certain art pieces.

I think everyone thinks about this when they're in the 15 yrs old range and maybe with the help of some booze. While it doesn't matter in the end, it makes one wonder why people say blue is a "cold" color, red is a "warm" color, for aesthetic purposes... is it a cultural thing, or do we associate them with "warmth" because of the things that are usually similar to that color (fire, ice).

To answer this question, I think we first need to understand what consciousness is. Once we know how we view the world outside of us, we could probably answer this question pretty easily.

Heh, similarly... does fur and leather feel the same to everyone? Is someone's cold someone else's hot? Or maybe more significantly... does everyone hear music the same way?

If not, then it's likely that your blue is also my blue.

Should your glance on mornings lovely
Lift to drink the heaven's blue
Or when sun, veiled by sirocco,
Royal red sinks out of view -
Give to Nature praise and honor.
Blithe of heart and sound of eye,
Knowing for the world of colour
Where its broad foundations lie.

It actually has nothing to do with philosophy. There is science proving this isn't the case. I am in a rush to leave right now, but I will provide source later.

If you're hard of hearing or deaf, yes!!

Hearing impairments aside, theres the cultural factor, not everybody likes the blues and not everybody likes metal.

I would also like to introduce you to coachlear implants :P

MINI-RANT ASIDE.......

There are colorblind people who can't see certain colors or not very well.

Oh I'm pretty sure nearly all humans perceive colors the same. We're sort of the same animal after all.
We even know how dogs perceive colors, why not humans.

I really don't think this is possible to 'prove' at all. If I see red one way and a friend sees red another way, but we both agree that that color is red, and perceive its relationships to other colors in the same way, there's no way anybody could tell. Any description of a color relies on related colors or wavelengths, so if those don't change, it's impossible to find and describe a difference in perception.

I suppose we'll be able to find out with absolute certainty once medical science progresses to the point where we can remove the entire eye and optic nerve of one person and put it in someone else. It'll be scary as fuck for whomever gets it first, though. "Why is all the yellow violet now!? Why is the ocean grey!? What the hell did you quacks do to me!?"
