I know how to research troll, etc, butchering!
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:13:23 am »

In the DF wiki, there are many creatures that cannon be butchered.
One of them is the troll.

I was in the arena, seeing how well a few trolls would do against a cougar for my goblin fortress (...it makes sense in context), and after they killed the cougar, they started fighting each other. (On a side note, is there any way to stop that?) I decided to see what happened when I butchered the troll corpse...it worked.

I think that people who care a lot more than I do about this sort of thing should try to advance dwarven science with this. Heck, I'll help...no, wait, I butchered two trolls in that space :(. I'll just have to toss a couple in somewhere else...

EDIT:
Troll 2's hair
Troll 2's cartilage
prepared troll lung (2)
prepared troll heart
prepared troll intestines
chopped troll liver
troll tripe
troll sweetbread
prepared troll spleen
prepared troll kidney
troll fat
Troll 2's nervous tissue
prepared troll brain
Troll 2's skull
troll meat (29)
Troll 2's skin
Troll 2's horn (2)
Troll 2's bone (34)
Troll 2's ivory

Anything except fellow dwarves can be butchered if you tweak dwarven ethics. Trolls probably count as 'sentient' creatures, hence why dwarves refuse to butcher then under normal ethics.

Hmm...Maybe the wiki should mention that somewhere.
Although, I wonder if goblins can butcher trolls...

It doesn't say that on the wiki, so I assumed I was the first to notice.

it's fairly obvious, the arena was meant for testing things, it shouldn't be limited by gameplay restrictions. also, i can't tell you exactly how to do it, but when creating creatures in the arena you can assign them to a team and they'll only attack creatures from the other teams

First off, I applaud your efforts to improve the wiki.

The reason trolls and other sentients cannot be butchered in fortress mode is their [CAN_LEARN] tag. That tag is the source of many unused troglodyte corpses.

Secondly, if you would like to contribute butchery results for animals that can be butchered, don't bother with separate teams because combat can spread parts around. Add the [AQUATIC] and [IMMOBILE_LAND] tags to every creature of interest and air drown a LOT of them because butchery results are so varied. I usually do ten of each gender because creatures like elk have sexual dimorphism. Only the males have horns.

You can do this with animals that don't normally appear in the arena by removing the [ARENA_RESTRICTED] tag from them.

Oh, as for the team thing: use the 's' and 'd' keys when 'k'reating a creature in order to change their team. It should be visible in the top left.

They definitely can - their ethics indicate that eating a sapient creature, whether killed directly or for other reasons, is a "personal matter". You may have also noticed that goblin invaders frequently wear clothes made from troll leather.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The reason you can butcher anything in the arena is because ehtics are tied to entities, and nobody is part of an entity in the arena.

Wait, so if I dick with the entity raws a little I'll be able to give my dwarves goods made from elf leather?

And feed them elf tallow biscuits. Though you'll be swamped in goblin tallow first.

Go ahead: get a piece of elf leather, turn it into a bag or rope, sew a couple images on it, decorate it with elf bone, stud it with every metal you have, encrust it with all the gems you have, and then build this thing in front of your trade depot as a welcome sign post.

That's not why I wanted to know how to do teams. It's because I get tired of things like seeing if two dragons can beat a bronze colossus, only to have them fight each other.

You may have also noticed that goblin invaders frequently wear clothes made from troll leather.
No because I've only just started a fortress...and it's one of goblins! That's why I asked.

And to Psieye...no, just no. I'm running a goblin fortress, and wouldn't do that.
