The only flaw to this theory is that it would imply that the Touhou comminity is the more mature then the we rouge-like fans.  :P

Exeption to prove the rule, or something of that nature.

I think it might have to do with the atmosphere, personally.

Touhou: Loud, obnoxious, and full of colorful anime characters.
Dwarf Fortress: Ascii characters on a black background set to calm, hypnotizing acoustic guitar.

Well that would make sense when you remember that the day to day running of a small society, as well as architectual planning, is an adult activity, where as trying to dodge every rain drop in a storm is a childish exploit.

I guess the conclusion of this thread is that in order to preserve the good atmosphere of the DF boards, the game itself must be made harder in proportion to its increasing popularity.

second and a half

i'd welcome more challenge anyway, but not arbitrarily so that the community quality is preserved. i'd say dont change it into some super-graphical mouse-only gimmick with super-help-screens in every corner and advice pages with tips and stuff. learning the keys is something any mature person can and should do (cause its more efficient once you learn them) and there is no need to spoil the fun by telling someone what to do all the time like most games do with their "dooooh! how do i put the game in?" kind of tutorials.

Minecraft had a perfectly fine, albeit not DF-standard, community a year or so ago, when it was still mostly unknown; but as a do-anything-you-like networked game with no learning curve to speak of, it was only going to be a matter of time before it drowned bodily under the swell of 12-year-olds.  DF, on the other hand, has no real appeal to the idiot brigade, as it requires considerable commitment to enjoy and offers no opportunities for griefing.  The similarities between the two games are regularly drawn, but the subtle differences are what really define the communities they attract.

Oh dear, I started playing DF at about 13 but just joined the forums this year. Does this make me a bad person? Or just a sadistic tool with delusions of grandeur just like everyone else?
