Bronze Colossus
« on: October 23, 2010, 11:38:13 pm »

So i was attacked by one of these things, and my dorfs have been fighting it for almost a month now. They've hacked off all its arms and legs, and its just a head and a torso lying there, and I'm wondering if its threatening to bite my dorfs knee caps off?

I'm not sure.  I usually just drop them into magma, it's much easier, for future reference..

If it's dead, it's harmless.  If it's alive, it can still gnaw your arm off.  Of course, I always pictured the things as like 300 feet tall, so...

So, what? It can gnaw your body off?

You're all missing the important thing here, he should've caged it modded the raws for it to be trainable and a pet then chained it outside his entrance. Or just loosed it on a big hole with a bridge.

Just imagine that Arthur was shorter and the knight was taller.

Also: Yes, BCs are a bitch to fight, you're better off just locking it somewhere and leaving it there for eternity.

Caving in one skull will do in a hydra, I was adventuring and got tasked to take one down I shot it in a neck, bolt got stuck. It spent the next five minuted shaking me around by my leg till it collapsed from exhaustion and I blocked it's shots trying to figure out how in the hell I was going to take it down. Then it suffocated.

This sort of reminds me of the Irish/Welsh myth of Bran the Blessed, a giant who was also the first king of Ireland (supposedly). He had a magic cauldron that was filled with blood, and whenever a dead soldier was thrown into it, it would come back to life as his own personal zombie soldier. The enemy would go to war with him, and every time either side lost a soldier, he'd just toss it into the magical cauldron and it would come back to life and add to his zombie army.

So, the gods get tired of this, and they plan to steal the magic cauldron, only he realized that if he himself dunks in it, he can never die, so before they can steal it, he takes a bath. The British army shows up, kills the zombies, and then proceeds to hack Bran up into little pieces, saving his head, which is still alive and can speak. They then take it to London and bury it under what would later become the Tower of London, and foretells the future from time to time.

I suggest you build a tower over it.

(story that is like literally RIGHT THERE, you scrolled past it to see this don't expect me to keep it here)

Whenever a story features an antagonist who is only immortal and not invulnerable, I always wonder why they don't just do this. Sure, they're alive, but what danger does a head without lungs pose? It can't exhale, let alone cause rampant destruction.

Mythology is full of disembodied prophetic heads, even up through to Christianity. The Knights Templar supposedly had John the Baptist's severed head on a plate. It's a common trope. Medusa's head supposedly didn't die either, Zeus had to put it onto the magical shield, Aegis, to prevent it from turning people to stone.

Is he maiming or killing your dorfs? If not I'd let them keep fighting, should get skilled up pretty good by the time they are done.

My troops just took one apart, took quite a while with a few legendary fighters in full steel armor and steel weapons. I did notice during the battle my spear dwarf had a cedar spear and had to make a steel version. Lost a few war dogs in the battle, but not a single injured dwarf.
