It should probably just block you from embarking somewhere without a 3x3 plot of land...

Have you ever tried embarking entirely on an ocean? Land is good stuff.

There is actually a way to stop it from Blocking sites, just look at the end of the "Embark Anywhere!" thread and you should be able to work it out.

I found some threads talking about embarking anywhere but the conclusion was that it's impossible without a utility and one doesn't exist for this version...

You get that mountains are supposed to be too difficult to travel with a wagon right?

Oh, it's a realism thing? I always just assumed it was to prevent us embarking somewhere where resources were too scarce.

Nah, it's realism.  I personally think that we should be able to create paths, but it would be hard to implement.

Since we are eventually going to have a greater effect on the world outside of our fortress, I can see how that might work. Send out a team of miners, masons, and carpenters and have them make a certain 1x1/2x2/etc. spot accessible to the outside world...

This thread makes me want to abandon my current fort and start a new one at the peak of a mountain.

Ahem. But if you embark on a 9x9 plot consisting of nothing but mountains with one non-mountail tile in the corner, the wagon will appear in the middle, thus travelling four tiles diagonally from that non-mountain tile. So what realism could prevent it from traveling two tiles to the middle of 3x3 embark that doesn't include aforementioned tile?

I made a 2x16 embark once that had a major river, two brooks, swamp, forest, and mountains in it that spanned a total of like 200 z-levels.  Bad idea, though it WAS awesome.  It was weird keeping track of everything.

If so, what are dragons, titans and megabeasts doing in this game? Not to mention a whole bunch of other stuff.

Stopping fun because of realism is stupid.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I protest against any form of 'realism' that involves dwarves being unable to navigate through mountains. They're called mountainhomes for a reason, and dwarves are probably much better than humans at getting around in the mountains.

I embarked on half a mountain and it killed my wagon  :'(

Another problem I see with mountains is that you'll have 500 to 600 z-levels to murder your FPS.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

Toady could impose a weight limit when embarking on mountains, to simulate the absence of a wagon (stuff is transported on muleback)
