Screams from below at the start of embark gives me nightmares, because it always makes for a very short fort unless you're very lucky (and fast) about walling yourself in.

I'm not sure how to help this though, to be honest.  It's a non-issue for me, because I have all aquifers disabled and instead have a mineral that shows up in small clusters in igneous intrusive that has the aquifer tag.  It works very nicely for infinite water at low annoyance.

That's what I'm trying to figure out how to do, how do I disable aquifers?

I googled it and found instructions saying to just remove all of the aquifer tags, now the game crashes instantly on embark...

I believe you need to make a new world.

I suspect that this particular case of "you don't need to regen, just go into the save's raws" was an automatic response to people calling for a regen. In most cases it really is just people now knowing that you can edit the save's raws but I can see how removing the aquifer tag from stones might screw up the game.

Only might screw it up?

Yes, might. I have done the replacement (turning [AQUIFER] to AQUIFER, thus removing them from the game) numerous times, and so far I have only seen one strange embark location, and I think that location was caused by combination of aboveground volcano, no erosion, straight cliff separating 100z high biome from another and so on.

So, most likely the changing will work instead of crashing the game or causing instant cavein. Just remember to edit the raws of save. Of course, the crashes could be caused by mistaken edit, removing something else as well as aquifers.
