The other option was to not attack it and let it pick your dwarves off one by one...

Well, at least it would have been more Fun to talk about.

Olm left. Angry Miner kills important people. Leave, try again.

Consider it a learning experience.

Now, you can keep things like that from wandering into your fort by placing two ropes with dogs chained to them at wherever you have your entrance to the caverns. Some things will still get close enough to attack them and possibly kill them but they run back off soon enough and you should have plenty of puppies in cages somewhere.

Now, if something kills one, kills the other, and comes inside- well, you waited too long to get a military.

You lost your fortress to a giant Olm >.>? I recommend taking all your milkers and cheese makers and turning them into your military, if you set them to train 7 mediocre dwarves will be ready enough to kill most bad things that come your way (excuse sieges/mega beast).

I was just starting my fort, and everthing was going great! I had just found a cave full of muddy ground to farm on! Things were looking up, and then...

I'm guessing the OP didn't have milkers and cheese makers to spare.

Wait why is everyone saying these are deadly? I had only 7 dwarves. Drafting them all gave me 7 wrestlers and they took it, no problem. Was I just insanely lucky?

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

Second attempt fails. This time by gaint toad  ::). Also, the defender i brought with me was killed because he didn't have a sword.  :'(

Just be glad it wasn't a Giant Ohmu.  Luckily for you, those aren't in the game, but if they were, you can be sure you'd be abandoning as soon as you had one show up.

I'd like to point out that those are GIANT things, not GAINT things.
Just to be a bitch.

Yeah you were. I did the same once, and it mangled my Proficient Armorsmiths' left leg, and killed the chained war mastiff (From Deon's mod. It was guarding the cavern entrance).

Maybe you shouldn't head straight for the caverns.  You could wait for your first immigrant wave, and draft them as your cavern guards.  Or, try this:  while your miner is digging down to the caverns, have a mechanic make some mechanisms.  Have a woodcutter cut some wood.  Have a carpenter use that wood to make either cages, for cage traps, or spiked wooden balls, for weapon traps.  When you breach the caverns, put these traps in place.

Or i could just wall it off for the soil.

The other option was to not attack it and let it pick your dwarves off one by one...
or just build a cage trap for it.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.
