WTF is a gaint Olm?

I was just starting my fort, and everthing was going great! I had just found a cave full of muddy ground to farm on! Things were looking up, and then...

Urist McMiner cancels sleep: Interrupted by gaint Olm.

Then everyone was getting interrupted! Wtf is a Olm!

One of the dwarfs walked in front of Thor to get a better view of the prye, and Thor kicked him irritably into the middle of the flames, which made Thor feel slightly better and made all the dwarfs feel much worse.

I giant olm is a much bigger version of a regular olm.

Pretty much anything with giant as an adjective should be avoided. Unless Toady adds butcherable Giant Plump Helmet Men.

Well, its running around in my fort causing my dwarfs to panic. Any advice?

(I have no military, or any extra dwarfs in any cause...)

Wall off caverns before something bigger wanders into your fort.

Build many, many traps.

Hide.

Monsters in your fort should consist of you making extra dwarves. Send some miners after it.

My best guess would be to draft your miners and use them.  Generally, if you equip them with "individual choice melee", they use their picks, which are more than sufficient to take down unarmored creatures (had to deal with trolls, troglodytes and giant toads early on when securing our caverns).

You change alerts by m->a but first you have to set up a schedule.

It would be much simpler if you simply hit s then k and targetted the olm for killing.

It was a bad idea to attack it. It killed one of my miners and sent one flying (Who for some reason is still alive), and it was RUNNING AWAY! Luckly that miner's recent tatrum ended quickly. That other miner who died was also her FRIEND.

The other option was to not attack it and let it pick your dwarves off one by one...
