The rise and (mostly) fall of my first fort
« on: October 23, 2010, 03:57:47 am »

I'm sure this won't be too interesting but I want to document the end of my fortress.

With only 17 dwarves I was thriving. The caves were being dug and I had more than enough food and goods production. I was trying new things like caging animals to train on. I had 3 axe-dwarves ready and raring to go.
Then as I tested my axemen against 6 released elk-birds an ambush appeared. My now wounded axemen ran out to attack while my civilians ran to a burrow I set up in my catacombs. The axemen were slaughtered and I waited below.
I lost many dwarves but fended them off. I was down to 7 once more.

Everyone was upset. My mason had lost his leg, and went mad, crawling around the halls muttering and naked. My metalsmith got so mad he killed my leader with his bare hands, while the man slept. My sheriff then tied up my farmer for no real reason and killed my metalsmith.
And then another ambush. The sheriff was slaughtered. The woodcutter was slaughtered, and my farmer, alone in a room on the roof. Not knowing why no one fed or even bought him water. He hadn't even really done anything. He starved to death.

On the left a cannon which shoots dwarf children into the sun, on the right, a massive pit full of magma charred dwarfs and elves.

Can't you deconstruct a rope while there's a bondage dwarf tied up with it, perhaps? I never had a "law and order" enforcing system in my fortresses, so I won't know.

Welcome to the game!
