How old is old?
« on: October 23, 2010, 03:46:16 am »

Seems like every time I look at a dwarf's profile, they are sixty-something or thereabouts.

I've heard that the dwarven lifespan is about 200 years, but I doubt very many people have been able to keep a dwarf alive long enough to find out.

dorfs live about 250 years old unmodded indeed. However remember they also give birth, get killed during world gen and stuff, the remains are which your fortress pool from. I've modded the game so they live forever and my 100 year world gen give dorfs around 200-250 years old.

From the raws their lifespan is 150 to 170. Same for kobolds.
Humans have 60 to 120, and elves and goblins have indefinite lifespan.

Thanks.

I would have guessed goblins to have a very short life span; like 20-40 years.

that would likely lead to problems during world gen with them dying out.

Since they like to raid people they get hacked up a lot, they need every edge they can get to survive the age of myth.  I imagine that despite unlimited lifespan elves being very in-character for an elf, this is infact also necessary to get them through world gen (what with them living outdoors and all)

I've noticed that when dwarves get to about 80 they have grey hair. It makes sense I suppose, given that they're entering middle age.

It's suddenly occurred to me that if they were in their late 50s in 1938, they would all be merely "late middle age" for dwarves RIGHT NOW.

That's a good way to visualise the differences in our lifespans. I wonder if humans are accurate.

EDIT:

I apologise Murphy, I did not realise you had already answered this.

Or, ya know, maybe their years are shorter.

The solution is to increase their rate of birth to compensate. Perhaps goblins lay a clutch of 3~5 goblin eggs every spring.

I had a 900 year old dwarf once.

I modded them to live forever. You have no idea how annoying it is for all your legendary dwarves to start dropping like flies.

Wait, mermaids are milkable? Sure would love to try doing that sometime...
