eating vermin

i read in the wiki dorfs can eat vermin, how do i do this?

they do automatically if you ar elow on food or they cant reach ... not advisable tough cause it makes them to forget work

They will eat vermin routinely if you catch some in animal traps. This is done via 'catch live land animal' task from the butcher's workshop or kennels.
Also you can install traps with bait and vermin will sometimes be caught in them.
And yes, if they are starving, they'll go about looking for vermin to catch and eat.

To kill vermin, magma won't help, but cats will.

cats eat frame rate, also some people already have cats as pets, i have like five cat pets.(meaning a stream of meat and leather in the form of kittens)

so why do people always complain about vermin if the cats should be killing them?

ahh well, its not like people are unhappy, most are estatic, i should just let the vermin fuck around with my 1000's of foods and booze.

As said, all dwarves will eat vermin when they're starving.

However, I've noticed a few of my more...  "odd" ones have developed a taste for vermin even when there's plenty of tucker.  It can be a right pain in the arse when you're trying to catch/tame a small animal and a hungry miner keeps dropping in looking for lunch.  *sigh*

Are you sure you're not playing 0.28.181.40d? The bug with dwarves eating vermin instead of normal food was supposed to have been fixed in 0.31.

Check and see if someone else has laid claims to your food stockpiles. I had a nasty bug where a miner/military commander was doing exactly that, and because all the food was hers, nobody else could eat.
