How did they get in?!
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:36:45 pm »

So I'm chillin' dorf-style, minding my own business, diggin some ore, makin some doors, engraving walls, throwing parties, etc.

A VILE FORCE OF DARKNESS HAS ARRIVED! **SIEGE**

Uh oh, that can't be good.. but, I should be okay, all my doors are buttoned up tight, there's no way they can get in.

Dogbert McSavageBreath has been struck down!

OH NO

All of a sudden all my guard dogs at the entrance are dead and there are 6 goblin pikemen running rampant through my fortress. I checked all my doors, they're all locked. Checked my walls, no breaches that I can see. No ramps that would allow them into the keep, and my stairwell to the cavern is also blocked off from the main fortress by 2 more locked doors. All doors are stone and none say "taken by the enemy".

How could they get in? What did I overlook? Fortunately, after reducing my population by 30% and killing almost all of my war dogs, apparently they got bored and left. I manged to kill 3 of them. They're still in the Units list, but now they're outside the walls and don't seem interested in getting back in. What should I look for as far as defensive weaknesses go? I could have sworn I had all my bases covered, the previous 8 or 10 rounds of ambushers never found a way in.. can vile forces of darkness jump over walls or do they pick locks? Even if so, wouldn't there be a door somewhere on the perimeter that says "taken by the enemy"?

Did you embark over an existing site? It's possible the game got confused about the location of the map edges and spawned them in the middle of your fortress - it's been known to happen back in 40d.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Is your map square?

If your map isn't square, sometimes the game thinks it is square, at least for spawning invaders, so enemies will sometimes spawn in unexpected places, such as directly inside your fort. It's a Fun bug, and makes defending forts on non-square maps difficult at best.

It's either that, or you're overlooking some way into your fort. The fact that they apparently managed to kill your guard dogs makes this more likely as well, since that implies that they came in past said guard dogs.

Not square?

As in... rectangular?

Ooooooooh crap.

When I was sieged once they brought trolls.  Is there a troll type that can break down doors?

Simple--- they brought trolls (all trolls are building destroyers), rode something that destroys buildings (ie, Jabberer), or they just forced your locked doors.

Doors only stop minor ambushes. You need raised drawbridges to seal your entries if you want to turtle up. A raised drawbridge can only be destroyed by a tantruming dwarf, as far as I know.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

See if you can designate a building to be built outside from materials that are only found inside. If you can, there is a path into your fortress.
Kobold thives can pick locks, but I think that leaves a message on the door (taken by intruder).

There is no force greater in the universe than a tantruming dwarf. Dwarven physics at work.

All trolls have [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2], so yes.

Welp, I'm still not able to figure out how they got in, I don't think the first round of besiegers had a troll, because just now a NEW vile force of darkness showed up, and they *did* have a troll. Actually, they had 6 of them. Said trolls made short work of the doors protecting my keep. DOH

Next question.. can monsters cross rivers? For the next reclaim I might start over a few levels lower, on the plains.. there's a river there which I'm guessing will make moat-building a lot easier.

a proper river will impede monsters yes, remember however that anyone can walk across tiles designated as a 'brook'.

In addition certain monsters are ambphibeous (badly spelled) hich means the river will not stop them.  Others still can fly...ditto on ignoring your nice river boundary

The only safe way to protect yourself is by using constructions to make your fort airtight. That means using walls and a ceiling above. As for entries, raised drawbridges act as walls it seems. Just make sure you pull the switch in time. You also need to have traps all along the entrance to give yourself some room for error and time to react.

Raised Drawbridge - Traps - Raised Drawbridge is a nice design. Two bridges and traps between them.

On the topic of a river, Goblins can mount an amphibious mount - this has the hilarious side effect of the goblin drowning, but the mount will still make it across.
